Do you bed the tang area on Savage Actions?

I purchased a stock that was bedded for the 3 screw target action. The stock is the Savage F-Class stock. It appears to be a great bedding job, however, the tang area is bedded. I have been a stickler about free floating the tang area of all of my savages, and that has certainly worked well for me. Anybody have an opinion on bedding that area, or free floating it? I fired the gun in the stock, and get 2 shots in virtually the same hole, and the 3rd shot goes about an inch over to the upper right?

Everything I have read says no bedding in the tang area on Savage actions. I have not bedded any of mine in that area.

Remove the bedding in the tang area on your stock and give it a try. It surley shouldn't make it any worse.

I usually clean the area out right around the edge of the tang. To the left and then back around to the right so that I can pass the thickness of a dollar bill the whole way round, like you would when free floating a barrel.

That's all that needs to be done. I have only had one Savage that did not have the tang floated and floating it helped greatly. The rest of my Savages have had the tang floated from the get go and they all shoot great. The consensus seems to be floating is the way to go.

The consensus would be correct. However, if it is bedded correctly it wont matter if the tang is bedded also, because it wont put any undo stress on the action. It would basically be just filling in the gap. That being said, I make sure all of mine are floated and havent had a problem yet.

All the tang does is hold the safety. It has nothing to do with the rigidity of the action itself, so there is no need to bed it.
