Do I need to have "Go or "No go" gauges??

Hey guys a quick question. Do you have to have the "Go and no go gauges" to chamber a rifle?? I just got my reamer and would like to get it chambered ASAP. Thanks!!!

Purchase both "go" and "no go" gauges from the same manufacturer as the reamer you purchased and provide them to the smith that is chambering your barrel! I'm assuming you plan on shooting this chambering for a long time so whats the extra $ in the long run? Just my .02!

At the very least you can rent a set ($8/10 days) from www.4-dproducts.com. They have some non-standard match type cartridges as well as all SAAMI ones. You must have them to safely chamber your barrel (especially if you want a minimum sized chamber). There are those that use virgin brass and scotch tape as 'gauges' but think about it. A case is soft brass and the gauges are steel. Which one would you think would be more accurate? I think this is one time when 'better safe' definitely applies.

I own my 6PPC and 30BR reamers. However, my gunsmith Billy Stevens, chambers all my barrels. Because he does the chambering, I have no need for a go or no-go gauge.

It is my understanding that one or two pieces of cellophane tape applied to the base converts a go gauge to a no go gauge.

No, you don't need both. You only need the GO gauge.

Gordy Gritters uses a single piece of scotch tape on the back of the go gauge. That makes the gauge .002" longer (half the difference of go to no-go). I always measure the dimensions of my headspace gauge before and after adding the tape. I've always seen a .002" difference, never more.

I have headspaced Savage barrels with that method. It works good, and results in a nearly perfect headspace.

When chambering a barrel, I send my smith a go gauge, and he sets the headspace accordingly.

+1 for just using a go gauge. Only time that no go gauges are vital is when inspecting firearms and weapons for wear and tear. Like military arms or old firearms coming in to a shop. The military performs annual maintenance using no go gauges and only uses go gauges for inspecting new barrels as they come in to the shop and when installing the barrels.

Thanks Guys, I was suppose to get the "Go" gauge for my 6BRX reamer but somehow it didn't get ordered. So now I set here with the reamer and no gauge.

My smith has not chambered this round befor so he doesn't have them either. So I guess I have to wait until I can get a "Go" gauge made. Thanks again for all the replys!!!

Raptor: When I ordered my 6 BRX reamer from PTG/ Dave Kiff, I included a go-gauge.

As others do, I also add a piece of scotch tape to the base, sometimes 2 pieces, at the most, and always use it when switching barrels on my Remington 700's. Works fine, with exact, repeatable headspace lengths every time.
