Do big guns; (tank/artillery) use a monster size reamer for chambering?

I don’t know what made me think of this. The M1 Abrams family uses a bottlenecked, rimmed shell. Just wondering if it uses a reamer that looks like the type used for our sporting rifles, but 7-8 inches in diameter.

I am interested as well.

I would guess they use a boring bar, and their tolerances are probably a lot more forgiving (i.e. +/- .001 tolerance may not be required).

It could possibly be forged in the process of forging the tube. If you search YouTube there’s a good video of cannon tubes being forged at the Watervliet arsenal.

You and I may ponder the creation of an M1 Abrams chamber. I bet those that have had an M1 shell shot at them don't even care. ive seen videos of the damage they do and that is one scary son of a gun.

That was really interesting. They did not specifically mention the chamber, but it makes sense that the carbide insert could form a chamber. I was an M1A1 tanker and never knew about how the barrels were made.

I believe that modern tanks use sabot rounds that are fin stabilized... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M829 ...barrel rifling not required.

It's not my picture. It's been around for a while.

I did work in defense contracting on some pretty cool stuff, but I am civilian. The Hydra 70 rockets were a fun project for me.

To clean the barrels, they take the smallest guy on the ship and soak a pillow in Hoppes, tie it to his ass and slide him down the barrel.

Wasn't the need to reduce weight on the M1A barrel where CF barrels really caught on ? Typically unlimited budget to explore....
