DIY stock

I love building stuff, so I got to thinking about building my own wood stock. I'm planning on building an F-class rifle in the next year or so with a Savage/Stevens action. I think if I use an aluminum bedding block the stock would be easier to make. Ive got a good amount of black walnut laying around i think would laminate up into a nice stock blank. Any thoughts about my plans? Anyone ever done this?

Sounds like a really worthwhile adventure. I doubt that I will ever tackle making a stock from scratch like that, but just to learn something about it I bought a book on the subject last week, and it has proven to be a real education. "Professional Stockmaking" by David L. Westbrook from Wolf Publishing (publishers of "Rifle" and "Handloader" magazines). Worth the cost of admission.

Wow! Great threat. Thanks for that link to that thread. I searched the sight for "DIY stock" but didn't come up with too many results. That's an interesting looking book Outrider.

The first laminate blank I made was with black walnut and carbon fiber.

As long as the lumber is cured and stable... go for it! Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want tips on laminating.
