DIY Action wrench for $10

Another picture of the business end of the wrench. The red line shows the limit of engagement of the wrench with the action.
Had no trouble taking the Tikka factory barrel off the action. There was no flex in the wrench but it is still softer steel than the action.

I have made many rear entry wrenches from 1" screws milled on the end and turned down in the lathe.

I have made many more out of 1" round stock, milled and turned down then weld a socket wrench socket to the other end.

1/2 hour of labor and a few dollars of materials.

Nat,

Unfortuntely I don't have a lathe (yet) nor a milling machine. The nice thing about starting with the 17'' Stanley 'ripping chisel' is it only required an angle grinder and hand filing to convert it to an action wrench. The chisel is made of high carbon steel and the shaft is 5/8ths hex. A cut off wheel on the grinder made short work of cutting it to length then the grinding wheel was used for shaping the ends. It was finished with a file to get a close fit. It was surprising how little grinding it took (less than an hour maybe).
I used a regular 5/8ths impact socket on a 24'' 1/2'' drive T handle to turn the wrench.
What a nice sound was the 'crack' when the action broke loose.

Thanks Whiskey, it sure was fun put this stuff together. The T handle was made from a regular torque arm ($20) by relocating the swivel to the middle of the arm. It took very little grinding to make it work.
