different bullet brands during a competition??

Does anyone shoot 2 different bullet brands, like Sierra then Berger or vice versa, during the same match? I hear that sending 2 different jacket materials down the same tube can cause some issues during the first few rounds of the second bullet selection.

Im just thinking if I shoot Bergers for the SR portion then switch to Sierras for the LR if I would have an issue.

6xc is the cartridge.

Thanks guys.

Patrick

Just to confirm your shooting NRA Prone or HighPower and not Bench rest correct?

Yes a fair number of shooters are shooting cheaper ( Hornady, Nosler, or Sierra) at the 200 and 300 yard line and then using Bergers at 600yards for XTC High Power. Never hurts to check it out before a Match to confirm for yourself not someone elses word.

Just tested the XBR 8208 & 95gr SMK today in a 6BR to be used at 200 and 300yards. Then it will be followed by a 105 Berger and Varget @ 600yards. All is good... So far.

Test it for yourself but in the old days I used Win/Rem FMJ's at 100/200 and Sierra Match Kings at 300/600 in High Power, it saved a little money and gave me piece of mind I had the best bullets for the longer ranges.

I have found that the first couple of shots can be a little funny when I switch between Bergers/J4 jackets and Sierras but it seems to be gone after a couple of shots. I shoot on the F-Class targets and I avoid switching when I only have a couple of sighters but don't worry about it when I have unlimited sighters. Of course one way to deal with any concerns would be to shoot the cheaper Sierras at short range then switch to Cauterucios for long range since Bob uses Sierra jackets and he does make great bullets.

I dont switch any more. If we went from the more precision stages to the less precise stages, I might, but we dont, so I dont. Honestly, until one is shooting cleans with high X counts, it probably doesnt matter much, just shoot the less expensive bullet and call it a day. Any Sierra, Berger, Hornady or Nosler match bullet is going to shoot well enough to clean any HP target. Focus more on the shooter, than the ammo.

I shoot with a gentalman who brings two different brands to the firing line at a 1000 yd br.......he shoots them both during the sighter period. I am not sure exactly when he decides on what he will use for record, but I know he kicks some serious butt.

bullets and or powder

I use Danzak (WS2) on my bullets and the problem that others mention is VERY insignificant...the big change I find is when I cange powders....somtimes I am using Hodgdon powders with one class of bullet (light or heavy) and then change to a bullet that I am using Alliant or Vita vori powdr .....this is the change that is most dramatic....If I stay within the "brand" and use Reloader or Hodgdon etc.,,with BOTH sizes ((even 4350 and change to 4831---or Rx15 then Rx-17)) I see no change.....hope this makes sense and helps.....Roger

I shoot Hornady 87 BTHP for shortline out of my 6WOA, then shoot Sierra 107s or 108 Berger BTs for 600, never had a problem, but I stay with one powder also. I havev several times clicked up to 600 from 300 and put the wind on and the first sighter is a 10 or X. Wish they all were! Dave

Russ, you answered a queston that I was wanting to try, I have a couple pounds BRX8208 that I was wanting to try ahead of Varget for shortling loads. I figure I might as well use the powder if I can! Dave

Back when I was shooting SR I was using the cheapest bullets I could get my hands on. At the time pull down M-193 bullets. They shot amazingly well in my rifle. I shot them at 200 and 300. Then for 600 I shot the 80gr SMK. I had no noticeable difference when I shot SMK’s for the whole thing or switched. I have a 308 that will go from a solid .5 moa rifle with two almost the same loads but different bullets. If I do not clean in-between shooting them it goes to a 2 or more MOA rifle. Same case primer powder within .5gr charge but just bullets is all to make it turn to crap. Clean and it was fine. Only your rifle will be able to tell you what it likes. Most of the time it does not matter but some days it does.
