Differences in reloading manuals 257 WBY Mag

Getting set up for loading IMR 7828 SSC is a popular powder for the 257 . New Nosler books lightest charge is heavier that Sierra's max load using the same brass and primer ,but their own 120 gr bullets . I'm using Speer ,so I guess use their listed load . Also my chamber was cut with factory Free bore

What does Hodgdon say?
Or Speer?
Since those are the components your actually using.

I have a Nosler manual, but don't use it. When H4350 is listed as fastest velocity in 7mm Rem Mag, i consider it more fictional engineering.

Different brands of bullets, because of their design, require different loads. The manufacturers want to sell their product and develop loads tailored to their bullets unique shape and components.

Berger is always below other company recommendations. If you try to tailor say Sierra bullet, it most likely will not work very well, using the Berger book. Using Sierra's load data, is what will work with their bullets.

In summary, you must tailor your load according to the bullet brand.

I'm also working on my new 257 WBY. I was told to try H-4350 and I did. It shot about 1/2" with 110 gr Accubonds. Tried 87 gr. ballistic tips and got the same results. This was with CCI LR Mag primers. Next will be a trial with Barnes TTSX 100 gr. bullets. That will be it. It will be a hunting rifle, perfectly happy with 1/2". The rifle was built by Zack at ODCR.

They all have different lawyers. Just my two cents Tommy Mc

always start low and work up! It also helps to have even a cheap crony cronograph for another reference.

I've seen the same sort of variation between Hornady and Sierra. Both using their OWN 150gr. bullets in 270 Win. Hornady load was Starting 4 grains over the MAX from Sierra and ending 10grs. over max. I don't remember which powder was used offhand, but that made me check other manuals to get a better picture of where to start with that powder. BTW The Hornady load was closer to the "NORM" of the other manuals/data I had on hand.

I've found the Nosler data works pretty good for me. My Bee is a 12 twist so I stick with 100gr TTSX.
Haven't found a load yet that'll print better than the Weatherby factory ammo.
Let us know if you find an accurate load for the TTSX.
Thanks.

Seems to happen a lot. I've noticed this with just about every caliber/chamber I load for. I've graphed load vs velocity for them, which helps me see it much better than reading numbers in tables. The Wby 257 graph below shows the powders I have (or want > RL25). Don't have any data to plot for my own loads with the Wby (have shot my loads, just haven't chronied them yet), but with my 9mm Browning Hi-Power, the results I got were closest to Sierra's for all the different manuals I have.Wby 257 Mag 100 gr Powders 01-04-22.JPG9mm Luger 115 gr 01-04-22.JPG

As others have mentioned, different components used in different reloading manuals can account for differences in pressure/velocity.

Another often overlooked variable is that even with the same components, the lot-to-lot variation in powder used during testing can account for different powder charges (i.e. Nosler used a different lot of IMR 7828 SSC than Sierra).
