Didn’t see that coming...

Me and my cousin have been hanging around together for 50 years. He’s one of the best guys I know. He’s had his share of challenges over the last 8-9 years, I think a lot of guys would have given up but he’s found the grit to overcome a tremendous amount of adversity.

Tonight he came over to grill a steak and watch the fights (UFC) with me, my wife and my Dad, we do that a lot. I was in my man cave reloading and didn’t hear him drive up so when I saw him standing behind me unannounced it made me jump. He thinks that crap is funny... I do too but I like it better when I’m not the guy jumping. Anyways he asked if I had a minute to chat so I stopped what I was doing ready to listen. He gave me a rifle case, inside was Ruger #1 416 Rigby, with a VXII Leupold and some dies. He said it was gift. I didn’t know what to say but he wouldn’t take no for an answer and I gladly accepted. We chatted for a bit and he told me how he appreciated the times I listened when he was struggling and told me how much it helped him. I don’t think I did anything out of the ordinary over the last few years, I did my best to be a good friend and help but I think any good friend would have done the same.

I’m only sharing it because when I see a post here and someone is asking for some prayers or expressing that they are dealing with a heavy a burden we never know how a kind word or a prayer may help. Part of that is faith and part of it is just trying to be a good human bean. It’s something I like about this forum, there’s a lot of good people here. It seems like we are constantly bombarded now days by negativity or worry. It’s good to recognize the good and the blessings too. Life is journey, it can‘t always be bright and sunshiny, you never know when someone is having a bad day, or week or even a bad year. I added pics of the rifle, it was a good day. Not because of the gift but because of the heartfelt message it will always reminds me of.

Ruger #1, 416 Rigby. I'm not sure your cousin actually likes you. ;) Seems to me he's trying to kick your butt using a remote control. That, of course, is meant jokingly. Slick rifle. Great cousin.

I spent a year helping someone I had just met (I hired him actually for a professional position) though their methadone treatment to get off heroin. I picked them up every day and dropped them off every day and took them to every methadone appointment and we hanged out like buddies sometimes after work. 8 years later after we've kinda gone our own ways (we're still friends but we don't really talk or visit) he calls me up one night to effusively thank me for making sure he finished his program. I didn't think I was doing anything special at the time. I was just helping someone that obviously both needed help and would get genuine benefit if I provided the help. It wasn't a big deal. It cost me 30 minutes a day and I got to become friends with an actual American hero who also didn't think that anything he did was special.

A FRIEND LIKE YOU IS PRICELESS.GOOD JOB.

Sometimes the smallest things have the most impact in a given situation. A kind word, shoulder to lean on, and even the occasional kick in the paints can truly show how much someone means to you. As you said above, life is not sun shine and rainbows, and no one gets through it alone. He was very lucky he had you there as a friend.

Sometimes just being there to listen is more help than we even realize. I'm sure we all have been on both sides of the fence from time to time. It's always a good thing to pay attention to the slightest remarks from a person. You may find out down the road that a lending ear meant more than any material thing you could ever offer. Obedience promotes Faith.
