Did the 6mm Grinch fall into oblivion.

Or are people still running it ?

I always seem to be late to the show but I would like to build an upper and this caliber really has me intrigued, maybe it does not function properly in the AR platform, can anyone confirm this has anyone done an AR in the 6 mm grinch ?

I have read and reread all of the past grinch posts, I like the idea of 103 grain bullet at 2900 ft./s which seems to be the norm, I also like the fact that it’s different and not mainstream.

I get it, brass is probably a PIA to form, neck looks awful short and there seems to be the reamer size issues, but I would like to move forward, John

I think a lot of folks like the 6ARC in an ar configuration currently.
Lots on long distance hit videos on coyotes on YouTube if you want to see their impressions of that cartridge.I am pretty sure Bart liked his Grinch especially with 88s out to 300 yards.I believe the Grinch and ARC are pretty similar, to me having good brass and a good supply of it makes up my mind pretty quickly. I happen to like the Grinch name and think the Grendel case size in 6mm has proven that its viable.I guess it comes down to your end use and your thoughts on ppc size BCG concerns.I also like different less common choices, but sometimes the easy button makes sense too.Buying factory ammo in the 6mm ARC sure would be easy if you don’t reload.Whatever you decide it should be a pretty good shooter.

Are you sure those speeds are from a gas gun? Sounds about right for a bolt gun but I suspect you'll be breaking bolt lugs in an AR15 at those speeds. You might get close with a long enough bbl (28 plus) and the right powder but proceed cautiously.

Hornady's MAX vel. in a "Gas Gun" is 2550 fps with 103-105 grain weights with their 6 ARC.
edit to add... AR loads were limited to 52,000 psi....Bolt guns are 62,000 psi.

Wait. I thought AR's were good to 556 NATO pressure levels - i.e., 62K? [That said, for safety, the load should be nominally somewhat below 62K to leave room of normal variations.]

The difference is the additional bolt thrust created by a larger diameter case. It's very much apples to oranges and is why the max pressures are lower for the ppc case head cartridges in an AR vs 5.56 based cartridges.

Curious as to if that 62k limit is only for 223 boltface cartridges and if the opened up boltface for grendle/arc is a limitation.
It's the additional thrust, not the thinned area of the bolt itself, but I'm sure that doesn't help. You can reverse engineer the calculated max pressures and it's not adjusted for the bolt being thinner.
Here's a good read..

I called Whidden about dies today, they said to send me three fired cartridges which I do not have lol so looks like my grinch progect may go on hold

And yet"..
No one has answer the op's question!..

Is anyone still using the 6mm Grinch?
I shoot a 6 Grendel and have been doing so a for several years now. Flip a coin between it and a Grinch. Hence my posting here in the first place. Both are excellent and what is most popular has little to do with what has or hasn't "fallen out of grace." Most people shoot what they read about on here or in match reports, which really reflects more about thje shooting community than it does about what can be competitive or not. Not much earth shattering left, that I know of...but at least I try other things, where most just go with the tried and true. Nothing wrong with that but I do like to see people test, learn and PROVE things by testing and learning. I would say that I've beaten more PPC's than have beaten me. Now think about that statement before getting crazy. It really says that I'm an above average finisher while shooting something other than a PPC/30BR etc. IMHO, a Grinch or a Grendel can be competitive, with the biggest difference being the necessity to fireform and use custom dies for the Grinch. Honestly, not much more good or bad to say beyond that...other than, I'm gonna keep shooting my POS 6 Grendel. I know...that'll never work! Lol! So no, it hasn't fallen out of favor to me other than I prefer to not need to fireform and use custom dies without seeing a significant benefit. The Grendel nor Grinch were ever close in a popularity contest, yet they've both won against way more popular cartridges. So I guess I missed the point of the question. Will it shoot...absolutely but it'll probably never be the popular choice...or favor, per se.

I agree with Guns and Gunsmithing. I believe you are going to be asking a lot for that case to get 2900fps from a 105 class bullet in a gas gun. Here is why i say that, and hopefully what i am about to say will help you along in your endeavor. The 6mmGrinch, 6mm AR Turbo, 6mm Fat Rat are all about the same exact case capacity based off the same Parent case, soooo they all perform very close to each other. No surprise there. About 2011 i built my first 6mm Gasgun chambered in 6mm Fat Rat. I shot it a ton and for a Gas gun was a very accurate rifle with a Satern, 1:7 twist 26" barrel.
I shot it competitively in NRA highpower competition, 200, 300, and 600 yards. At the 600 yard line with the bullets seated long to get them out of powder column and single loading them not out of the magazine as per the rules. i was able to get them to shoot at right around 2800 fps with a 105gr Berger VLD. ( which is what i run my 6mmBR at) There is huge difference here when you get the bullet seated out of the case vs trying to cram it into the case so that it fits MAGAZINE Length. I wouldn't even bother if i would have to do that. The AR magazine is a huge limiting factor in the case's performance. At the 200 and 300 yard distances i shot lighter and shorter bullets like the 87gr VMax, 95gr SMK and so forth.
Maybe the 2900fps is not important to you, but since you brought that up i thought i should explain what most likely will happen. Your going to end up around 2700fps with a 26" barrel and less if you go to something around 22" barrel. All of that, and you still have to get the gun to cycle! The Gas gun complicates this process so much more than running a bolt gun. Its a bad ass little case that i love dearly. But it has its limitations. Especially when you AR has a Max OAL of 2.250 or there about.
An even more bad ass case is the 224 Grendel shooting 88gr ELD's.... and that is very unique little case as well.
I say all of this so that when you do yours, your not completely disappointed. Take a look at the 6mm Fat Rat or the 6mm Turbo 40. those have already proven in a gas gun. its almost the same case design.
