dialing in a barreled action

This might sound like a stupid question, but what is your method of dialing in a barreled action through the head stock?

Right now my lathe is setup with an outboard spider with another spider mounted to a backing plate. Im just going to be recowning and threading for a muzzle brake. So how do you dial in the barrel if you can not dial in on the chamber side of the barrel?

Stick the point of the DTI inside the bore. The point will ride over the lands and grooves. Take a little practice to dial in this way, but it works. I concentrate on the grove when starting out. After dialed in, both the groove and land should hit on the same mark, atleast with the custom barrels anyhow. I have a factory remington barrel with a land that was smaller than the others...

Ive been practicing this with some take off barrels and have got one down to returning to the same spot on the groove with a .0005 indicator.
My question might not have been clear. How do you indicate the side of the barrel with the action still attached to it? Do i dial in at the tip of the muzzle and then run the DTI tip in further? or try and idicate both sides of the barrel?

This is how I have done it with the action attached and opinions may vary. I simply dialed the breach end close on the barrel OD so it wasn't really off center. No need to worry about that end much. Worry about your muzzle getting it dead nuts and do your machine work.

I actually have a Mauser barreled action in the lathe now. I just tightened the rear spider and used my 4 jaw to dial in the front of the barrel.

I cant get a recoil lug into my headstock and i can chamber a 1.450 barrel in there- how big a lathe are yall using?

My lathe is just a 1.50. I don't think I would have been able to thread the muzzle if it wasn't a 26 inch barrel. It's a 300 win mag Mauser.
I guess you could remove the trigger and chuck it up in a 4 jaw chuck.... Unconventional I know but if it turns true then....
Oh and I would use my steady rest too.

A range rod will work . I just chopped one of my barrels to 16.5". .22BR and then realized the only range rod I don't own is a .22 cal. So, I made my own range rod from some brass dowel left over from another job. Made if for a light press fit. Worked out quite well as after threading for suppressor and recutting the crown first 2 shots went through the same hole. Also saved me from having to deal with PTG and the dreaded phone call for a range rod. A win win in my book. Lol.

That's exactly what I did on an 18 inch barrel intended for a suppressor.
