Determining Twist Rate

Is there a quick and easy way to determine the twist rate of a mounted barrel without bore scopes or expensive equipment?
Does cleaning rod rotation with a patch follow the rifling with a 1:1 ratio?

thanks

Deepwater,

You have the right idea. Take a cleaning rod, put a patch on it, mark it on the top, and push down the barrel. When the mark returns to the top, measure how far you pushed the rod down the barrel.

It's real easy. But don't PUSH......pushing a patch or brush through the bore just makes it unscrew, and it's also trickier to measure distance. PULL a tight fitting brush from the muzzle end. Put a little piece of masking tape on the cleaning rod right up against the rod guide. Mark the top then pull it back til that mark has made one complete revolution. The distance from edge of tape to back of rod guide is your twist. Doing it is quicker than the time it took to write this.
