Determine McMillan HTG fill type

Good Morning Members, looking for a little help here.

I recently purchased a used McMillan HTG inletted for a right hand Remington 700 short action with standard BDL bottom metal and MTU/M24 barrel contour. It’s painted with single sling swivel stud mounted up front. Spoke with McMillan about determining the unknown fill type based off inletting specs and weight. They said they can try to determine correctly, but the best way would be to know the original purchaser and the date ordered.

I’m working with the seller on trying to gather this info as he bought it second hand from a member here that was planning a build but the stock just sat in a box unused until he decided to part ways with it.

Would any members here have a McMillan HTG stock with the same inlet, sling swivel studs, painted fiberglass shell that they would be able to weigh accurately?

Maybe the member that sold a similar stock that they ordered new in the past couple years that meets this description in a dark camo sees this post and can PM me. I’ll let them know to whom I bought it from and can share pictures of the stock.

Any help is appreciated guys/girls. Let’s get this figured out! Thank you!

Also, the stock has no pillars installed nor has it been bedded to an action yet.

I haven’t gotten it yet. Just planning ahead. Seller should receive payment tomrrow then ship.

Really wanting to know if its edge fill and absolutely necessary to install pillars.

I didn’t forget about this, still waiting on stock. USPS is taking there time and not living up to their motto.

FYI, according to their web site:

"
How much does a McMillan stock weigh?
Generally, our hunting and sporting stocks weigh 2 to 2.25 pounds depending on the design and options. Our tactical and high power competition stocks are designed to be heavier. Since there are several factors that influence the final weight, such as the accessories you choose, each stock will vary in weight."

I'd say that if less than 2 Lbs. then lightest fill, 2 to 2.25 Lbs. then standard fill, over this than Magnum or Sniper fill.

I wonder if this is specifically the HTG they are referencing?

It's not. Of all their hunting stocks, the HTG is probably the heaviest, all things being equal. It's a fairly bulky stock compared to the others. I have 3 HTG's and 2 Classics. All of them are the standard fill, and the HTG's are close to a pound heavier than the Classic's.

Once you have it in hand, you can probably tell what fill it has.

Edge fill always has pillars, sniper fill has a unique look to it vs regular fill.

Edge fill should be under 30 ozs, regular at 32 to 36, sniper will be above 40, all dependent on LOP & recoil pad used among other things.

Does McMillan automatically install pillars if it’s edge? I assume they tell you it needs it whether you pay them to install or have you/your smith install

The stock weighs 34oz. Has one sling swivel stud out front and one out back. Mtu/m24 barrel channel. 3/4” thick Decelarator pad. Texture on the grip and foreend. Thoughts?

Also, I see a metallic shine around the action screw holes. And I strange texture inside. Almost knurled. Maybe it has pillars installed from McMillan. I’ll scratch them this evening to investigate. See attached

That's a standard fill. It's within a couple ounces of what the 3 that I have weigh.

Do you have any with McMillan installed pillars? I don’t recall my last McMillan action screw holes looking like these.

I have two edge filled stocks with McMillan installed pillars. The pillars in one of the stocks were installed too crooked to use. I cut them out and installed new ones. I haven't started the assembly on the other one but it appears they may be straight enough to work. The inside of mine were smooth and the outside had a serrated surface like your pictures.

I’m thinking the knurling process on the outside of the pillar transposed a texture to the inside….assuming that McMillan factory pillars are built this way (is this the case?).

Holes are straight. Receiver and bottom metal bottled right up. Just have to take a bit of material off of front action screw.

Yes, Edge fill comes with pillars, any other stock can be ordered with pillars for extra cost.
