Deep South 1000 Yard Match- Blakely GA June 1,2

Long Range Prone and F Class is returning the the Arena Training Facility in Blakely GA, brought to you by the AIM Rifle Club and Whidden Gunworks. This is an excellent facility! We've always found the winds to be challenging but readable-the kind of place where a shooter can really learn something.

The match program is attached below. Please note that registration will be done by email to info@whiddengunworks.com but payment will be received at the match.

Lodging is available at the cabins on site. Contact the Arena Training Facility about these options. There are hotels in Blakely GA and nearby Dothan AL.

I've got you Phillip and will look forward to seeing you! I sent you an email as well.

This is one of my very favorite ranges and the match will be good.

Many thanks to John Whidden and Bill Walter for getting this match and the Blakely range going again. I’m sure there was a lengthy bit of negotiating to get back on there, and quite a bit of work to get the pit side of things back up to speed since the range closed four years ago.

This was my first foray into 1000 yd shooting. I spun a 308/12twist/95 Palma chamber 5r Bartlein on the Tubb. I worked up a load quickly using 155.5 Bergers that seemed good enough, and then I was out of time.

On the Friday practice day, I needed to get a zero for 1000 from my 600 setting. Down four notches on the right sight, and John said to put about five minutes wind on.

First shot was a one o’clock 7. What a relief to be on paper with that first shot.

Got my zero refined a bit and called it a day.

During the match, when I had a condition I could keep them in the middle. But it’s a 1000 yards, so...there are no stable conditions. I clearly showed my rookie status.

The load worked fine, my vertical is sub X-ring.

I’m a bit hooked on the Palma/Fullbore shooting thing, but I’m not giving up XTC and Midrange. Blakely is the closest 1000 yd range to me, and that’s a nine hour drive.

John and Bill say they are going to run a spring weekend and a fall weekend there going forward, so I’ll be trying to fit that in my schedule for sure.
