Decipher This

I'm trying to get John into the NRA smallbore camp, then let him shoot the nationals the next week. Just stay up there. My problem is I'm so new at this I don't know the verbiage and what to register him for, as far as events, or even how to register. He is a J2 at 17. He is very comfortable shooting in the normal 3pos. format in precision, and just started 50yards prone this week. That's on me, I thought he needed to learn windage & elevation and reading the outdoors, I'm a hard mom. I have a friend who might let us stay until Sunday, and the cooler food works for us so my expenses are low, I just got to figure what events he can shoot as a junior and what the haties conventional VS metric 3p, conventional VS metric iron sights. I'm just a mom not a coach so can one of you fine young gentlemen translate for me. Thank you.

This year’s Smallbore Nationals will begin on Tuesday, July 16, when registration opens and the 3-Position Championship will get underway.

Wednesday, July 17 the Metric 3-Position Championship will begin.

Friday, July 19 is the Conventional 3-Position Championship.

Sunday, July 21 is registration day for the Conventional Prone Championship, and also a practice day.

Monday, July 22 the Conventional Prone Iron Sights Championship start.

Wednesday, July 24 are the Team Matches, Dewar Team, Drew Cup, Randle Match, Mentor Match, Wakefield Match and Whistler Boy Match.

Thursday, July 25 the Conventional Prone Any Sights Championship begins.

Saturday, July 27 marks the beginning of the Metric Prone Championship.

Mrs. Hamilton,
The NRA National Smallbore Championships is comprised of several separate individual National Championships. There are 2 3 Position championships and 2 prone only championships.
For the 3P championships, one shot on the A23 conventional 50 yard target and one is shot on the A50 50 meter target. These 3P championships each consist of 2 120 shot (40 record shots in each position) matches, one fired with iron (aperture) sights and one fired with any sights in which you can use either iron sights or a telescopic sight. These matches are fired one match per day over 4 days.
In the prone championships, the Conventional championship consists of 4 multi stage matches fired over 4 days on the conventional (A23, A26 and A25) targets with stages at 50 yards, 50 meters and 100 yards. Of these 4 matches, 2 are iron sight only and 2 are any sight.
The Metric Championship consists of 2 multi stage matches, one iron sight and one any sight fired over 2 days on the metric targets.
In the past, you could register for any individual match or combinations of them. Anyone can register for any of the National Championship matches, Juniors are not excluded from any of them.
You mention above that your son is a J2 at 17. If he turned 17 prior to January 1 of this year, he would compete as a J1 not a J2. I mention this because I have seen lots of confusion regarding this subject.
Hopefully you will find this helpful.

Great breakdown Pete. If I may add one thing Paula, you may already know this, when pfiori refers to the Metric matches, that is the target that ISSF, USA Shooting, and NCAA uses. They are scaled proportionately for use at 50 meters or 50 feet. The Metric targets are significantly harder than the Conventional targets he mentioned. I'd sign him up for as many of the matches as you're able to stick around for. It looks like a lot of shooting. Katie wants to try it this Summer, so I'm pretty sure we will be there also. I hope we can cross paths. It would be nice to meet you guys.

Paula -

if you PM me your email address, I'll put you in touch with a buddy of mine, who ran the NRA Smallbore Championships at Camp Perry for 22 years. He can guide you through the process. While it might seem confusing, it's not once you break it all down:

3 position: Iron sights,
3 position: Any sights,
3 position: Team matches,

Prone: Iron Sights,
Prone: Any Sights,
Prone: Team matches.

That's a way over simplified description, but the way the NRA has the matches broken down, it allows someone to come and fire exactly the matches they like to compete in, nothing less, nothing more.
