Dead Zero steel match is in the books, changes to format listed as well for July match

We had 40 shooters brave the forecast of thunderstorms and come out to the first match at Dead Zero. We started out the match with a 1000 yard cold bore shot which proved to be interesting. Greg Murray won that at 2 3/4 inch off dead center just edging out Kyle Mcdowell by 1/4 inch. The match had calm conditions and a couple relays got hammered by a short thunderstorm and winds. The main match ended up with 6 shooters going clean and making the shoot off. Four of the six were out after the first round of the shootoff with Jason Miller and Tim Harber left. After 5 rounds between those two Jason Miller won the shootoff. Congratulations to the winners. We had some kinks that will hopefully be worked out by next match. All in all I guess it went fairly well, we already have a couple changes that will help it smooth out and go faster. Thanks for coming out guys.

Here are some changes we think will make it better next month.

Shooters will Be squaded into groups of three, this way they can spot and score for each other. We will try to paint steel in between the relays.

We will shoot two distances before getting off the bench, this will be fewer times setting up on the bench which will be a big help. This will also allow more rounds to be shot if so desired.

The links holding the chain that kept breaking will be upgraded(gonna try to get chain replaced with belt also).

Any suggestions are appreciated as well.
Thanks to all that came.

A BIG THANKS to Troy and Matt plus the others working the match.. First time I've shot in two years due to an injury. Was a lot of fun and really enjoyed it. Never shot steel before (always paper) and I liked that too. I heard good comments from the guys I talked to and it appeared everyone had a good time. Thanks again and looking for the next one.

Id vote to allow sighters. Putting somebody up there with no idea where its going to hit will get discouraging very fast. I know of lots of shooters that wont shoot long range br due to no sighters once the clock starts. Not allowing them at all may make some not even try it in the first place

We let everyone have unlimited sighters at 100 to get a confirmed zero before the first stage of the match started.

Glad it went well.

Sent you a PM but ignore. This thread is your answer as I just asked how things went. Agree that the fewer times you have your shooters set up and tear down, the easier it is. That is especially true for the older/experienced shooters.

FUN is the optimal word. Some way for the less competitive to win something (lucky shot) is also a good wrinkle to aid it making it fun and promote attendance.

I agree with Dusty.

I agree with Dusty. Allow at least one or two sighters to see where you are, then see if you can put 3 on metal. Would not take up much time, maybe a one minute sight in period.
Then most would clean the match, if that thunderstorm hadn’t come through half woulda cleaned it. Heck we are using huge steel already;)

Youve left it up to pure luck- not skill. If everybody cleans it gotta get smaller targets.
The big steel was purposely used to make it fairly easy to hit for the guys that are just learning. I wanted the first match to be fun and not discouraging. We plan on going to smaller steel in the future as needed. There are many shooters that can walk out from 100 to 1000 without it being luck. We will continue to listen to the guys shooting at the range and adjust as necessary to keep it fun and growing. See y’all in July!

I was there to watch and stayed for the whole thing, looked like everyone had a good time.

To be the first shoot at a new facility I think it went very well, Troy and the gang did a good job keeping things moving.

Makes me want to build something to shoot in the near future.

Our steel matches run similar, the way we have it now works the best that we have had them setup.
We shoot in teams of 2 in this class and then we have 2 teams shooting together, one team shoots and the other team scores for them.
We have a cold bore challenge @1100y, 5 shots @ 1100y, 5 shots @ 1000y, 5 shots @ 800y, 5 shots @ 600y and 5 shots @ 500y .

Guys in the relay will shoot CBC, 1100y and 1000y than change relays and every one will shoot those 3. When that's done relay 1 will start with the second half and shoot 800y, 600y and 500y and done.

As long as we don't have any mountain bikers or cattle riding/jogging through our range we get through 3 or 4 full relays pretty quickly

We don't use any sighters, if you let it go it counts but this is sort of a LR hunting scenario meet F-TR and not really shooting for groups of a table.

We dropped our gong sizes probably around 40% this year and in tall grass if you missed that 1st one you had no idea where you are, took one match to get use to the new sizes and allot of guys are hitting 95% of the targets during a day. One MOA steel plate gets small pretty quickly at a 1100y when you have 20+mph wind swinging all over the place but its awesome
