Dasher at short range?

thinking of what to build for 2016.....and a dasher is obviously a very popular, and successful, round...but that's always 600-1000yds. Where i am in NC...the only 600yd shooting is the Hickory ground hog shoot and 1000yds is at hawks ridge...but the VAST majority of shooting I do, and will do, is at two private ranges...one is 100 and 200 from covered benches and wind flags and the other is prone/single bench out to 250yds in a friends field. But as a matter of covering the "what-ifs" and just building a straight dasher....would it be worth it shooting at closer ranges? How do 66-68's do in dasher twist?

One thing to remember, if you throat for a 105, the 68 will never be able to touch the lands with the bullet in the case. Throat the rifle for which bullet you want to shoot. I shoot the 68's at 3650 in a 6 BRX, blistering accuracy. 55g nosler at 4150 shoots very tiny groups at 300. My barrel is throated with .060 which is about .020 shorter than normal for 68's due to short necks and short bullets.

You will find that case preparation for the Dasher is a PIA and there are better cartridges for short range shooting. My choice would be a no turn neck 6ppc or 6BR

No reason at all IMO for a Dasher at that distance.
A straight 6 BR is all that's needed.
If you are going to fire form for short range then hands down 6ppc is the champion

If you get a good one and tune your loads well you can shoot in the 1s and 0s at 100 yds shooting 107s. And I do well against 6brs at short range and if you do 600 and 1000 you will like the dasher. You can get your brass hydro formed and start shooting. Good luck with whichever one you do

I have a load that is shooting in the 2s at 200 yards so you should be able to get into the 1s at 100. Possibly zeros. Nothing special. 33.0 gr Varget under 103 gr Vapor Trail seated to a square mark on the bullet.

I respect what your saying, and by its evolving reputation, the 6PPC has been conclusive thus far. But if no one tries other cartridges, then no one is the wiser one way or the other....

I have shot some very impressive 100 groups with my 1000 yard Dasher's, that would rile my 6PPC agg results from back in my SR-BR days.

Besides not being interested in going back to 100/200 benchrest to see, regardless my guns would be illegal due to weight and configuration (17-lb LT-Gun and 54-lb-HV-Gun). But would love to see a 300yd open event happen some day, like has been discussed by the IBS president.

I have a Dasher light gun and it will shoot small. But it will not agg over a two day match 20 five shot targets with my PPC. It just won't.
To finish a weekend match with a teen two gun agg is not easily done

I think I would try the 108 berger's before the 66-68 bullets in a fast twist dasher. I shoot them in my 6br and they do well in our groundhog shoots from 100 to 500 yards. I am breaking in a 7.83 twist dasher barrel and will try the 105 hybrd first and if they don't shoot I will go to the 108's.

I'm pretty sure even the 300 yard world record is held by the PPC
If the OP is only shooting 100-200 and was thinking of fire forming cases anyway IMO the PPC is gonna win handily

Bart sauter has a 300yd 5 shot 5 target record agg thatll never be broken- a .1518. Numerous others there thats pretty impressive and all except possibly one was shot with a ppc possibly all of em. A ppc will out group and out agg a br or dasher anywhere anytime. I see some stout group shooters try to get an advantage pretty regular shooting heavier bullets and all kinds of different cases and none have ever pulled it off- and im talkin folks that can win with a ppc cant do it. I welcome anybody that wants to try it just aint gonna happen at 300yds in. Every once in a while somebody will get a wallet group with one like the one with a 30br .007 but even with those i never see one above mid pack when the dust settles. I hope yall can do it now tho. Please try its kinda boring shooting a ppc all the time

Well what do you think is a better round for a dedicated 300 yard SCORE rifle, a Dasher or a 6BR? Face it at 300 an X is a gift. Just want to stay in the 10 ring. I just think that the 30BR at 300 is marginal. I just had Brux send Sid Goodling a 7.75 twist blank. Which caliber would u choose? PS: I bought a 24" Hawk Hill barrel from a friend that he chambered in 6x47L with a 9tw that I will be trying at the same distance.

I agree with Dusty the 6PPC is the choice overall for short range. With that being said, every time I tune at 100 with my 6BRX I wonder why I never shoot a 100, 200, 300 yard match with it. Shoots in the ones most groups and has much better wind fighting than a 6 PPC. Yes. if I could only have one bench gun it would be a PPC, but a properly tuned Dasher or 6BRX will be competitive.

Having shot a bunch of rounds thru all the previously mentioned chamberings at 100-200 score ill take a 30br or another 30 cal common variant (gorilla, major, grendel) but going to 300 ill use a 6ppc

Yes it will but i was answering the other post about a 30br or 6ppc at 300 for score. I have been watching folks try to beat a ppc with anything else for 20yrs now. I have dashers and 6br rifles that will shoot low ones at 100. Thats 17 and 22lb rifles and i have a safe full of 10.5lb ppc rifles thatll out agg em on any day. Any decent ppc shooter/tuner can do it its just the nature of the beast. If that wasnt the case there would be at least one br on the line but i rarely see it
