Dallas-Fort Worth What's Happening?

Hi guys,

I'm in Dallas for the foreseeable future and am beginning the long process of moving. I suspect it'll be at least six months, maybe longer, before I'm really ready to shoot again, what with a new job, looking for a place to live beyond the temporary apartment, moving my stuff over from Arizona, getting to know the city with my wife, etc.

However... what's happening in the area in terms of competitive shooting? I've spoken to a few friends here who tell me that prone Highpower matches are few and far away (Houston, Carthage, OK City, Beaumont). I've seen that there's a monthly Smallbore match at Terrell. Anything else going on? Am I going to have to hang up the old shooting irons? Are there any nearby ranges?

Help!

Welcome to Texas!!! Check with Stick Starks over at S&S Precision Rifles. He regularly shoots in Denton, NW of Dallas and not too far. Stick can probably also give you some additional ideas.

Thanks! It's sort of a return to Texas, i lived in Houston in the '80's, shot at Bayou Rifles and Beaumont then and still have a few good friends from that time. Looking forward to making new friends here!

German,

Welcome to DFW. I am primarily a Bullseye shooter but have been playing with .22 LR Benchrest and thinking about other rifle shooting. I would recommend calling Russ or Jerry at Stiller Precision. They both shoot over in Denton.

Also, I can connect you with some of the folks at the Texas State Rifle Association. They should be able to point you to good places. Let me know when you get to town and have some time on your hands. We can get together for lunch (or dinner) and discuss your options. I am really looking forward to meeting you. Your blog is always a good read.

A few of us are members of the Terrell gun club. They have a good rimfire position shooting matches, no RF benchrest. We have a few guys that shoot cross the course and go to Perry. We will have a registered BR match in Denton next weekend. If you would like to check the Terrell club out just shoot me an email.

Thanks Cort, and Butch!

Butch, I'll be in touch, the Terrell club looks like the closest venue.

Cort, thanks for the invitation, next weekend should be good. I'm staying in Irving for the moment (close to the office).

Not very close, but we shoot both 600 and 1000 yards monthly at Camp Robinson (ANG Camp) in North Little Rock, AR. Most of the 1000 yard matches are Saturday and Sunday 3x20 each day. All classes from service rifle, to sling with irons or scope, to F-Class. We would love to have you come and shoot with us.

To add to what Butch said, at Terrell, we shoot a NRA HP XTC match on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Its shot at the 200 yd line with reduced targets to simulate 300 and 600 yds. No pit duty as targets are fixed, and we score after each stage.

On the 4th Saturday of the month, we shoot Garand-Springfield-Vintage rifle match at the 200 yd line. Again, no pit duty.

Terrell has RF matches also, in addition to pistol, and shotgun ranges.

Carthage, Tx has full distance matches, but they are 3 1/2 hours east of Dallas, near the Texas-Arkansas line.

Heard you were experiencing some employment angst recently, glad to learn you've found a solution. Not so glad it's taking you away from the shooting mecca in AZ (Bruno's is obviously gonna miss you too!) & that I missed getting to shoot Ben Avery with you. Good luck with your new position! (You don't need luck with prone, you've got that down pretty good ;-) )

Keep in mind Dallas is a lot closer to Lodi than Phoenix!

German, wish I had known as I was in Dallas last week. I spent a week with Stick at S&S working on the fine are of barrel chambering! He is the center of things rifle around Denton!

Clay shoots are popular around here. We shoot 2" and 4" clays out to 500 meters at Graham, Spanish Fort, and Tac Pro. We also have a "Fun Shoot" at steel out to 500 meters in Graham almost every month. Feel free to contact me for details.

George, Bill, Steve, Eric, Nick, thanks for the replies, I sure appreciate it!

I hope to get over to Terrell and Denton sometime soon, everywhere else in time, but probably not for a few months.

DFW..... shudders
Seems like most people with options are moving OUT; either East towards Jacksonville/Rusk or SW towards Fredericksburg/Kerrville.

What's happening? Didja hear about the woman was shopping in a Dallas area Target store who was stabbed in the back by another shopper? Guy just unwrapped a kitchen knife and assaulted her for no reason. In the news about a week ago... Inner city Dallas is a hell hole. Neiman's no longer has merchandise worth perusing. Of course, there are opportunities in war-zone locales, but only up to a point... Hope you are getting hazardous duty pay and hefty signing bonus. Buying-in? Might really want to think twice about that or stall till you get the lay of the land...

Well welcome back to Texas German! I'm down here in the Houston area but I go up to Dallas for meetings every so often. I wouldn't mind a detour to a shoot just to watch you in action. After you get setteled in, keep us posted on the happenings so we have the oppratunity.

The type matches you like are out of the DFW area. But as you know - Texas is a pretty easy state to travel around in.
The Panola County Gun Club in Carthage (east Texas) hold XC matches on the first Saturday. I think they had 38 or 48 shooters at the match this month. I think they have the highest number of High Masters of any club in the nation. Most of them got that rating using a Service Rifle. The late Rick Crawford did much to establish the high standards there. You won;t get much wind reading practice there. I think it is closed in on 6 sides by tall pine trees.
The Sunday after the match is a 300/500/600 prone day.
Many of the shooters from Terrell and Houston travel to PCGC.
Long range is tougher to find a place to shoot. Right now Houston is the only 1000 yard Texas range - with pits - hosting prone matches. One can travel to OK, NM, or AK for their matches.
We have hopes that more places will open back up. Right now the military ranges are being - how shall I say it - being used for military personal only.
I think Texas has the most F-class shooters in the nation. Many are on the National Team.
You may have to travel - but the competition will be worth the drive.
Welcome to DFW.

Thanks for the updates, guys. I've been in DC for a few days with no time to get on the site but I hope to start exploring the area in the next few months.

We will be shooting this weekend in carthage. Across the course is saturday, and we will be attending the mid-range Sunday. It would be awsome to have you shoot with us!
