Daily Bulletin 7/10

Paul:

Your post of Dan Liljas' excellent description of Bullet Design Secant and Tangent was great. I have printed off so I can share it with my customers. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done today.

Thanks

Nat

Nat--

Glad this was useful. I find myself still getting confused sometimes between secant and tangent. And I know people get confused when they hear a reference to a 7 ogive or 8 ogive bullet design and they really don't know what that means.

The picture certainly shows the difference between a secant and a tangent bullet and Dan's diagram really shows how the nose curve varies from one design to the other.

Hi I am kinda new to the advanced reloading. My questions are could you load closed to the lands or jam with the tangent bullet with more in the neck and it would have more bearing surface? Is that the object? Pros and cons?

thanks Link

The main advantage of the Secant, more pointy) shape is a higher ballistic coefficient for a given weight. Both secant and tangent bullets can work in the lands or out of the lands. Generally, VLD,secant ogive) shooters put their bullets in the lands... but not always.

In terms of bearing surface, you can have both long- and short-bearing surface designs of either type, secant and tangent). Generally, however, the secant,VLD) designs tend to have a shorter bearing surface for a given weight, but not always).

The Berger 95gr VLD shown at left above has a very short bearing surface compared to most 6mm bullets in the 100gr range.

What Pauls is saying in a 105 Bergers usually shoot better jamed into the rifling, and a 107 Sierras shoot better with a jump. There are exceptions.
