Cz455 varmint in 17 hmr pillar and bed advicechannel

I have a new 455 and boyds thumbhole that has been pillared trying to get it to shoot more accurately. Nice solid pillars but have not bedded action or barrel channel yet. It shoots no better (1 1/2" groups) and barrel is floating in Boyd stock. I have read a lot on rimfire central but would like more opinions. I did try a piece of rubber between channel and barrel but shot a foot high and all over the place and the two barrel screws that hold barrel to action are tight. Makes me think barrel not being threaded into action is not the best but it is what it is and I read that some of these even without Lila barrels shoot pretty good. The advice I am looking for is how much of the barrel channel should I bed - have read all of channel and first 3 inches and 1 inch and some not at all - my thinking is to shoot consistent and to hold the barrel still to prevent stringing at least 3 inches but would like to hear from someone that has bedded barrel with improvement or at least what not to do. Don't really plan on changing barrel so no worries there. I have bedding and shoe polish ready and would you bed action - action with pillars seems really solid with a great fit in the boyds stock. Thanks for any suggestion or thoughts

I have the 455 with 22 and 17hmr barrels. On my first day at the range with the 22 barrel installed I wasn't impressed, after break-in it did start to shoot better. I put the HMR barrel on and poi moved a little but not bad. I have not done any work to this gun other than shoot it. I still have the HMR barrel on it and have killed groundhogs @ 200 yds with and have been able to hit golf balls at 200 yds at times with it. I think my cz 452 is a little more accurate but am starting to get used to the 455.

How many rounds have you put through the 17 barrel ? - i have shot almost a box of 50 and still all over the place. I gave up on a 22 rimfire doing anything at 100 yards a long time ago. It is 100 yards to the woods in my back yard and if I want to hit anything I just leave the 22lr's in the safe. Djdillondon on rimfire has done a lot of these 455 varmint rifles and I read both 1 inch and 3 inch of channel- was hoping to narrow down some info

I have a 455 and it didn't shot well with regular 22 over the counter ammo. Try some match ammo, sk,rws, tennex, and your groups will shrink. My shot about 1.5 to 2 inches at 50 yards with cheap ammo, with the match ammo I get basically a one hole group with 20 rounds fired.

this is a 17hmr and not really sure just how much match ammo there is out there for 17hmr - i have read about some sort of neck thickness caliper or something that allows you to sort by neck thickness - sounds good and have read it makes a difference and i may check on that just for the extra edge but its going to have to show me some potential before i spend more money on a rimfire !! - love the thumbhole stock and being able to grab some factory ammo and go at it - easy simple and fun but it must hit what i am shooting at - i know there has to be some fellas on here taht have played with the 455 - they just have not read the thread - im asking some of the smiths on here for their opinion also - chime in on the bedding under the barrel

I had my CZ 455 American pillared and bedded full length. Accuracy suffered, groups opened up to 1.5" or more at 100 yds. Started removing bedding material until accuracy improved. Still have about 4" in front of the action. Accuracy with the best ammo, 17 gr Hornady V-Max, averages an inch or slightly better for 5-shot groups at 100 yds. Vic

The hornady 17g ammo also the best for me in all my 17's - Vic I appreciate the input I think I am going to try the first 3 inches of channel and shoot clean until I have shot couple of boxes and see what happens. I will post back just for information and try to include accuracy details as I proceed. I would really like to know how much Lila barrel improves over factory barrel. Some say factory barrel shoots ok but I did see video of rifling from factory barrel and then the Lilja Huge difference

I can't say how many rounds I have put thru the 17 hmr barrel but tried several brands and found that the hornady 17gr vmax seem to shoot the best for me. You may find that after your barrel has a couple hundred rounds thru it, it may tighten up. A few years ago I had a savage that would only shoot 20 gr bullets. You may want to try playing with the action screws as this may be the problem. By the way my gun is an American not the varmint.

I have been shooting a 17 since they first came out. Currently shooting a 455.. Accuracy is pretty good, depending on the wind.. IMO ammo is more of a factor than bedding.. Mine is untouched 455 LUX. Bro in law has the American.. Both shoot 1/2"@100 on a good day. We shoot Hornaday 17 gr ammo.. I believe that variances in individual rounds accounts for most of the inaccuracy.. Prairie dogs don't know the difference..

Edit, Checked my log. I did install a Rifle Basix trigger when I first got it..

I do not own a 17 hmr that will shoot the 20 gr pills and yes the hornady 17 gr ammo shoots the best for me as well and I have tride most brands. I would be happy with 1/2 in at 100 and I think consistency will be better with sorting rounds from what I have read. I'm not sure the name or who makes it but there is a tool or a way to sort by measuring the necks and I read about it but can't find post or remember what it was called if anyone can chime in. Plan is to bed 3 in of barrel channel and measure with caliper the necks of a box to see if there is a big difference in necks and sort then shoot. I will post results. I saw several people got together to make a bulk buy for discount on the Lilja barrels but not sure just how much they saved.

Zilla I believe that might be a kinetic research knob on the handle on rifle mans bolt. May be custom but I put one on my 455 and it fit great. Mine was made for Remington bolt but fit 455

My wife's SS Savage thumbhole stock .17HMR will shoot under an inch consistently @ 100 on low wind days. her best groups have been in the .2"s and .3"s ! we did the Apache trigger mod which was a huge improvement to the stock trigger. we also replaced the bottom metal with a thicker piece. got to be careful not to over torque the action screws though, as the wood will crack easily.

we found that CCI TNT ammo with the Speer HP bullet by far the most consistently accurate ammo.

Get ahold af DJdillon on rimfirecentral. He can tell you what works and what doesn't. Full length bedding worked well for my 455. Or you can go the route of no barrel bedding at all. Very important though is to get the action pillar bedded. All the CZs will benefit from this. 3/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yds. is about the best you will get on a regular basis with the 17 HMR. which is pretty good for a rimfire.

Try CCI TNT's. Someone once told me that every 17HMR likes either Vmax or TNT's. My CZ 452 HMR and former Anschutz HMR both preferred the TNT to the Vmax.
