CZ 550 in .308

What do ya'll think about this as a basis for a 6BR Varmint rig? I'm thinking .272 no-turn necks, Lapua brass, maybe starting out with Lapua factory ammo. I'd rebarrel and rechamber with a Pac-Nor barrel. All opinions welcome - even those who sday I'm an idiot...

I think it would shoot great. The only questions would be can it feed from the magazine, and what twist do you want. The awesome factory ammo is available in 105gr, 90gr, and 77gr. Ideal twist rates are 1:8, 1:10, and 1:13 respectively for those loads.

There are various places on the web were you can get info on tuning the CZ trigger. If a Savage can shoot quarter-moa with a PacNor pre-fit SuperMatch, I bet you could get very close with a CZ.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm thinking about the 90gr load, so I'd want a 1:10 barrel, as I understand it. I was thinking about sending the barreled action to Pac-Nor and having them install the SuperMatch CM barrel, BTW, what length would you recommend? ) and have them match the factory barrel profile, true the action, etc. all as a package. Sound like a plan? I really like the CZ set trigger and think it is a great one.

As far as feeding from the magazine: kinda doubt it but that is not a plan-killer if I can easily single-load.

Will this be for a hunting rifle, or a varminter, or a match gun? That would determine the contour. Something from 26-28" we'd go with, but I'd recommend something with a heavier-than-factory contour. That might require a little stock work. For chambering, and action-trueing, we'd use a smith. The pre-fit option is tempting, particularly for Savages, but normally a good smith can give you more personalized attention.

It would mostly be for Varminting, with the occasional informal target shoot at my local gun club. I was thinking 28" would be the right length. Some minor stock work is not a problem, I am somewhat familiar with such work.

I have a 27" PacNor on my 6BR and it gives good velocity and outstanding accuracy. 28" would be fine too, and give you maybe 20-25 fps more velocity. I'd run the 75gr V-Max or 80gr Berger MEF for Varmints, and the new BIB 95gr FlatBase or 90gr Scenar for paper-punching. Some guys also get good results with the Berger 88gr lo-drag flatbase, but it is an unusual design. David Stripling shot a 1.017" 5-shot group at 600yds with the 88s recently.

I have a CZ 550 in 243 and have been thinking of turning it into a 6BR using the factory barrel. I'm thinking if I shorten the follower, simular to the Rem 700 fix) it may reliably feed too. I have already chambered some dummy rounds and it seems to work pretty good.

I would have a different gunsmith do the truing and chambering. I sent a Rem 700 to them for the rebarrel and truing but they didn't touch the bolt face or lugs when they trued the action. I know because the complete bolt was parkerized before I sent it to them, The factory machine marks along with the parkerizing are still on the bolt face and lugs.

I do have 3 of there chambered and threaded barrels I installed on Savage rifles and they shoot extremely well.
