Cutting shotgun barrel

I asked a smith about cutting down a Rem 1100 vent rib barrel from 26 to 20-22 inches, thread for Rem chokes, and reinstall the bead....$700.00 WTFFF! Maybe it was a typo but.....

I'm gonna get more estimates and refinish will done locally or I'll try ceracoat myself but what do you guys think of the $700.00 estimate?

Each shotgun barrel needs to be measured, inside and outside, to see if it can be threaded. Some can, some can't. Most older Remington barrels can, but not for RemChokes. Not enough wall thickness. That's where Tru-Chokes come into play. Designed to be used on "most" barrel threading jobs. I've been threading shotgun barrels for 30yrs, that's why I know this. I have tooling for 12, 16 and 20g. All Tru-Chokes..... Threading barrels for choke tubes is almost a thing of the past due to the low cost of factory produced replacements that are available.

Are tru chokes like briley’s thin wall or are they thicker than that?
Tru chokes are thinner than RemChokes but not nearly as thin as Briley offers. There is also a TruChoke Thinwall that still isn't as thin as Briley. Briley is expensive but is sometimes the only option. But that's not typically the case with a Remington. Get into some of the double barrel stuff and there is nothing but Briley and there are instances where they can't do it either.

Out of convenience to the customer, I use Rem or Win choke when possible. TruChoke for most, TruChoke Thinwall for the others and send the rest to Briley.

Carlsons' cost me a A-5 barrel many years ago. That's when I decided I'd best buy the tooling and start doing it myself, in shop.

I can handle that but only for tru choke as stated, not enough meat for rem chokes in the middle of the barrel. can also extend the forcing cone if you like
Pm me if interested
I'll keep you in mind.

Also the prices shown above look reasonable makes me wonder if the estimate I got was really a typo, deleted the email so cant check it again.

My best option is to get the Rem competition barrel when it becomes available. I want this for some law enforcement games here in Texas. The last one I went to several years ago in Tucson was a blast, the NRA LEO games in Albuquerque was also fun.

I have an 870 with extended mag but want the same thing in an 1100. I do have a rifle sight barrel for the 1100 but it doesn't blow wind up my skirt. Anyhoo thanks for all your replies, I always learn something good.

Your correct your better off buying a new barrel if available for a reasonable price , most of my work is for barrels that are not easily found. I also recommend that you get the forcing cone lengthened if your gonna be shooting buckshot in competition. It takes a little of the kick out and improves patterns. Most Anerican shotguns have a 1/2” long cone for paper wads. Most of your better shotguns have the 1.5” cone for modern plastic wads.

So are you saying that like if i go buy just a plain jane 870 itll have a 1/2” cone for shooting wads we havent used in many years or did i misunderstand? Im not very versed in the shotgun world- briley and rob roberts handles my tasks on shotty barrels

Depending on where the vent rib gets cut this can be a real bear of a job to finish off the rib and make it look finished. Threading the middle of a barrel for a choke is a "maybe" kind of thing too. Your best bet from a cost standpoint is to buy a new barrel as some have stated above.

Yes, he'd be better off buying one and lengthening the forcing cone himself. Unless Remington has started making them 1.5" long from the factory now.

If you can find one Remington made the Special Field 1100 with 21" choke tube barrel. That would be an option. It's only chambered for 2 3/4" shells though.

Just ordered a Rem Competition Master 22 inch barrel, that will scratch the itch I got. Now the sell the rifle sight barrel I don't want. Anyway thanks for all your help, I was close to having a barrel cut down but I'm good now.
