Cutting new centers?

Could i face the barrel by hand with a piloted faceing cutter from brownells.I got these for crowning before i had a lathe.Im just interested what you think.Thanks Mike
 
Lots of them are used but I believe you can do a much better job with your lathe and a razor sharp cutter.
