Cutting an Anschutz barrel?

I have a model 54 match from the 1960s, that I use as a trainer For Palma and fullbore and I also shoot a few fun matches. It’s in an Eliseo stock and closely mimics my Palma rifle.
The barrel is 26” and is extremely heavy. This rig weighs a little over a pound heavy than my Palma rifle. I am considering cutting the barrel down and putting a bloop tube on to get sights radius back. However I have read that cutting off that “knob” is a no-no. Please advise. Mike

The 'Knob' was the mechanism that Anschutz used to tune the barrels, by cutting either end you will need to retune to get the best accuracy.
By starting at the chamber end on a gun of that age, you will be able to rechamber and remove the likely 'ring' that has accumulated over time.
If you plan on putting a tube on in anyway, I would put a tuner tube on it (ex. Uptagrapph) and have Dan Killough tune it for you.

Kerry is the man in both Palma and smallbore so definitely listen to him. That said, if you end up putting a bloop tube on without a tuner, I can recommend Medesha Firearms products. Very tough but light enough to stay solid. They make the tubes and adapters that Champions Choice sells for a bit less. They can match an Anschutz barrel diameter. Tube is drilled and tapped for a sight base or buy a barrel band type base.
FWIW I have just finished cutting down a slow Benchmark barrel. I was warned that their barrels had smaller diameters close to the muzzle. In slugging the barrel in six places from chamber to muzzle I found that the bore diameter slugged .2205" along the entire length vs. a bore diameter of .223" that would be "normal". By cutting the barrel down to 18.5" (and adding a 12" bloop tube) my muzzle velocity bumped up from 980 fps to 1080 fps with no accuracy issues that I could not fix by tuning my rear action screw. This on a Winchester 52C so not an apples-to-oranges comparison but indicative I think.
