Cutting a Neck Size Die

I am planning a 20/223 AI, and have a 204 Ruger neck die that I would like to shorten about .100" for necking down purposes. I would like to hear opinions on a way to remove .090" of material off the bottom that would be more efficient than my nibbling at it with boring bar. All thoughts appreciated.

I've cut a few back, carbide is a must to break through the case hard surface, once you break through its relatively soft. Something like a CNMG 432 series carbide inserted tooling would do a decent job of major stock removeal, but most any carbide insert tool should be able to get the job done.

I would face the majority of the material off as opposed to boring. Carbide is your friend. Face from the center out . Hope this makes sense.

Run rpm slow, and feed same???

400-500 rpm with a .002" crossfeed is where I'd start you'll probably have to fiddle with it a bit to till you figure out what it likes. Its going to scream until you get through the case hard surface most likely, so I wouldn't worry to much as you start out.

I have cut into carbide dies with diamond... and I have worn out the diamond and cracked the carbide. But sometimes it works.

Good old cemented carbide tooling will cut like butter through it...600-800 rpm will work

You can also grind the case off and then clean it up on the lathe.
