Cutting a bullet in half

dcali

Bullet Maker
I want to mill off half a bullet so that you can see the cross section (lengthwise). Anyone have any tips on holding the bullet or achieving a clean cut?

Best way would be to bed it in epoxy to about 45% of it's diameter. Mill a nice holder out of aluminum that you can hold in your vise. stick the bullet in place with a bit any simple adhesive. pour epoxy to desired level and let it set for a day. Watch for the meniscus effect. --Jerry

actually, the way I've seen this done before is to pot it 100% in epoxy and then mill the epoxy away with the bullet. I'd still put it in a nice aluminum boat if I was going to keep it for show and tell.

I'd try drilling a hole in a piece of wood that is a tight fit to the bullet . press the bullet into the hole . then bandsaw through the wood cutting the bullet in half . pop bullet halves out of wood .

Just use a bench vice with two pieces of soft pine vertical extending above vice jaws, use a spacer on bottom length of bullet or case. Place bullet or case above vice jaws bullet tip and bullet base against sacrificial pine jaws. Saw through pine and bullet or case dress up on a file or emery paper. Works every time.

Just put them in your your mill vice and go easy. I've done a bunch that way. Take them to your belt sander when your done to clean them up.

Stationary vert belt grinder....tuned to perfection (those that know,do).Watch those fingers.Stand up bullet on table, grind away.Didn't work?...grab another.

A spritz of water on a "broke in" 100 G belt should do the trick.

A glass platen does wonders on a belt grinder.

A wood push stick with a V notch and a strong double stick tape works well.
