Cutting a 6BR Barrel?

walker2713

My Boy Hap....
I've got a Savage F Class in 6BR that I have about 140 rounds through, and am very happy with it so far. I want to get a decent case for it, and am looking at the Plano vertical case I can buy through the forum site/Amazon for less than $50. However, with the 30" barrel my Savage is too long.

Is there any downside for me to have my gunsmith cut off and inch and re-crown the barrel? Any harmonics issues? I definitely want to leave as much barrel as possible, since I may want to have it cut back and rechambered down the road.

Thanks,

George

i faced the same thing so i cut a hole in case for barrel then after i got rid of barrel& replaced it with a 28in. i glued the piece back in works just fine shooter63

I did the same thing but not wanting the barrel end sticking out of the case, I went a different route. I removed the recoil pad, traced it on the Plano case, then cut it out. My recoil pad sticks out about an inch, but the barrel and crown are inside.

A 28" barrel would be fine for 6BR. I think you will find that it tunes at approximately the same velocity as a 30" barrel, albeit at slightly higher pressure.

Cutting a barrel to fit the case? nonononono.

Much simpler to cut a small hole in the front for the muzzle. Saw a guy at a match recently that had a 32" barrel in his Plano - he cut a hole and then taped a 4" long 2" wide tube to the case to protect the muzzle end.

I should've taken a photo of his case, I knew this would pop up on here..... ;D

Why not buy a soft case that fits the rifle??? Prone to Success makes a nice case. Having part of the barrel or stock exposed makes no sense to me and defeats the purpose of a hard case.

Most forum members on here seam to stick to the principle of buy once cry once. Why not let that apply to gun cases as well. I purchased one really nice 2 gun case from gander mountain one year and it was pricy as heck but it has been my favorite case for everything I do with firearms. I ship guns to smiths in this case and fly my guns in it. It is there to protect your investment or prized possession depending on how you view your rifle. You spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on what can amount to works of art and engineering in many cases. Get the top of the line best case you can afford and be proud of it when you go to the range or when you go on a nice hunting trip and your rifle is still zeroed at the destination. I learned hard way to never skimp on cases. I recommend you plan on getting what you can afford and then don't and save up for the next best after that.
