Custom Sizing Die Question

I am planning on making a 6mm Dasher FL die with an undersize reamer I have and was wondering if anyone has opened up a Wilson neck bushing body to make a one pass neck+body sizing die like the Redding 'S'. I have reamed Wilson seating dies to different chambers but never the neck dies. The outside of my Wilson 6mm BR bushing die is not hard so I suspect it is not hardened inside...but I wanted to ask if anyone has tried this operation or has any advice.

thanks in advance,
-lige

Don't think it will work as the dies are leaded steel and are very soft, will not hold up to body sizing. Try the Newlon dies.

Thanks for the info Mike. I just knew the die body was soft and was hoping I could have it hardened if needed. I guess that the Newlon die is made of good steel and does not need hardening after reaming.
thanks again,

you grind inside a 6 br full sizer or a 22 br or a 7 br if you fit a wilson bushing as soon you have remove the 0.005 hard skin you can re ream it without any problem

after you need to resend for case hardening

If you have that ability, why dont you buy a die blank and ream it and open the other end up and tap it. I have made a bunch of them.,4 6dasher dies) they all work great.
If you grind .005 out of the die how will it resize at the base of the case?

gaintwist you could run your resize reamer into the wilson neck die but it will not size the base of your case. also most all dies are made of 12L14 material,,a leaded bar stock) including the wilson dies. I have made many full length and bullet seaters out of this material. after I make a full length die,s) type I have them carborized. which Introduces carbon back into the surface of the metal and case hardens about .010 deep. You can use them unhardened and will work fine, but you have to keep your cases very clean!

carborized. which Introduces carbon back into the surface of the metal and case hardens about .010 deep.

most regular major dies maker are made with lw carbon easy to machine blank and after they are carborized and heat treated to get a hardened surface

If you want to make dies, 7/8x14 ) any low carbon steel, between 0.15 to 0.25 % of carbon ) can work

that not very difficult to lathe turn all surface without remove the die to the chuck as

for a 3 inch dies lenght use a 5 inch blank
you let 3.25 outside the jaw
you drill a center hole
you make you OD clean
you make you OD fot threading
you make you thread always between center, tail stock )
you remove you tail stock
you drill your dies, carefully use sevreal drill of very good quality with a small bore make with a small bore tool to allow perfcet centering of you drill
you ream as any chamber job
you set your headspace, I usefully make final headspace by gringing or carbide turning after heat threated
you cut the die of
you remove the bit of steel from your lathe
you set you die reverse in yur chuck
you can drill and tap for decaping rod

note I jet my dies schank smooth without any knurled surface to allow easy machining operation of both side of the dies

you polish the die inside

you get a perfect custom dies .

if you want to get a smaller inside diam you can get carno nitrated heat threated, you add carbon and nitrate, not ssure in english ) and you surface grow a bit that allow to get smaller inside after that before, thickeness deep can be around 0.01 to 0.02 but caution to prtect your thread to avoid thread breakage .

good shooting

dantec, i do agree about any low carban steel will work, but i do like the 12L14,very smothe machening) and in the description of the material is to have very close or tight grain, witch also might make a smoother die. but i can see from your last post you most definetly know your way around the dies. keep them on the X and good shooting. joe.
