Custom rifles

Ok here is a wide range question. If building a custom 300 win mag what should be an expected results from a gunsmith. In other words if shooting a custom built 300 win mag at say 700 yards should someone expect the rifle to be able to hit a golf ball, or baseball, or basket ball, or a house. I have never had a custom rifle built and want to get a GENERAL idea on what to expect as a good or bad result. I hope this makes sence.

That's a loaded question. There's a wide range of custom and also a wide range of applications for the custom. There's also a wide range of pocketbooks. More specific?

Dont know how to get anymore detailed. Just kind of trying to figure out if I have a custom rifle built what should I expect. Is a 1/4, 1/2 3/4 1, 2 moa expected for a custom hunting/competion shooting rifle.

I'd say better than 1/2" all my cutom rifles shoot much better than I am capable of. In teh hands of a good bench shooter that will do much better than i am capable of.

I would guess around 7-10 inches at 700 yards, with a really good rest. This is assuming your willing to put in the trigger time and buy the best components. Without glass your looking at around $3,500. It will also be necessary to tell the difference between 600 and 700 yards for hold over. You obviously will need to reload to get the best out of the gun.
You should get together with a competent gun smith and kick it around.

Man, 700 yards is a long, long way. You'll need a pretty powerful scope to pull it off.

A gunsmith should give you what you ask & pay for.
How can you expect anymore..
And the end result could be anything from greatness to abortion.
Cuz that's what you ask for.

Now if you go to a gunbuilder.. Someone who has worked a design to some end.. You'll be able to better predict the performance of what you're buying from him.
A good gunbuilder will know the results up front, out of experience, because HE controls it,not you).
For example, if GA Precision has built 35 umptysquat guns that ALL performed at 1/2moa or better for customers, and you order one, George might imply or even guarantee this result for you.
And if you tell him you want a bull barreled Sendero in 300ExcessBoomer shooting 1/2moa,with brand ammo), he'll likely laugh and point you toward a gunsmith.
Who could blame him..

Are we talking about a deer rifle with a skinny barrel and forend, or a benchrest or varmint rifle with a fat barrel and forend? These are completely different animals and accuracy expectations should be different. Also, accuracy guarantees are usually given by a smith for him. In other words, I can build you an accurate rifle, but I won't guarantee that YOU can shoot it to its potential.

Well, that is kind of a loaded question but I suppose that one would need to understand that a custom rifle is only a part of the whole picture of long range shooting. Conditions, loads,,driver) bench equipment all play a part in that game. With that being said, all things being equal and up to the task, but most of the time it is not) one would expect to be able to shoot smaller targets and hit them more often with the custom built rifle. Now, the real meat and potatoes of warrantee of group size would have to come from the rifle builder. On the other hand, one could visit long range matches, read about the long range shooting disapline as much as possible, talk to long range shooters, etc. and probably come up with a general idea of what kind of difference to expect from a given custom rifle/caliber combination as opposed to a regular factory rifle. I can say from experience of owning a custom built rifle and factory rifles and shooting them both at distances out to six hundred yds. at targets such as pop bottles filled with water 20 oz. and 2 litre, I have been able to hit consistantly with both rifles, but the tightest long range group that I have shot was with my
6 x 47 Shehane at 500 yds. which measured .991 I have shot a couple of groups at 500 yds. that would come close to being equal
to this, one with a 7mm Mag. Sendero II and the other with a SV
.308 both Remington factory rifles with only a Rifle Basic trigger replacement in each rifle). But, I have shot many more groups, period) with the factory rifles. This is just my experience and in no way am I trying to point you in either direction. I hope this will give you some idea of what you would expect from a custom built rifle. Bill
