Custom rifle actions

Hey everyone,
Does anybody know of a manufacturer that makes a bolt action center fire receiver that’s scaled down like cooper arms
For small cartridges like 222 and 223 rem mainly a repeater for 17 fireball and 20 vartarg

Custom? I don't know. Unless Borden makes something that's not advertised, it appears that they're all ~1.35"+ diameter actions using roughly Rem 700 footprint(s). As far as miniature actions suitable for .223-sized repeaters there's:

Sako A1/L461/L46
Howa 1500 Mini
CZ 527
Remington 799/Zastava/Charles Daily Mini Mauser

The Cooper M38 is indeed a tiny receiver, but a single shot. You could open one up for making a one-off repeater, but you'd be cutting on a collector's item and cooper would likely abandon you for warranty/support (though being a discontinued Model they've probably already abandoned the platform anyway).

There are a couple intermediate sized actions too that are smaller/slimmer than "standard" actions e.g. Kimber 84M or NULA/Forbes, but that's probably not what you're looking for.

Might check with Tim McNally, who owns Wichita Arms these days. I saw some small actions on his table at Tulsa a couple of years ago. Can't tell you the exact size and don't remember if they were available in repeater form. mcnally2@ckt.net

A lot of folks looking for this end up with a Sako short action. Nearly as well machined as a custom.

Defiance has one. It's based on the model 7, so it will be be a little smaller than a standard short action

Thanks a lot guys for the helpful info
I don’t mine blue printing a action
I really don’t want to mess around with CZ, Sako, or Howa
Don’t get me wrong I like them all
I have 5 Sako’s
They all have metric barrel tendon threads I’m not sure about Howa. Once you have your lathe in timing and in gear you can’t take it out of gear because it want go back it the same timing
As the previous cut
I really don’t want to throw machine in reverse and back threading tool out every pass I’m afraid I’ll smash into the locking lugs
Thank you kindly for responding to my mayday call LOL.

I wouldn't reject the Sako actions over the metric thread issue alone.

Many quality smiths use 16 TPI with no problems.

If the cost doesn't scare you off, the BAT SV is also a very good action.

You may not need to true it as bad as you think. Its not going to make that much of a difference chasing threads on those actions

Hmmm I didn’t see that one I guess I’d need to look closer

Thanks

The 'Super Short' doesn't meet your requirements but it does handle the 6BR family of short cartridges.

Here is the description from Borden Rifles website:

“The new action from Borden Accuracy (Borden Super Short 6) features a Rem 700 short action-compatible footprint with a shortened magazine well and shortened port set up specifically to reliably feed 6 BR, 6 Dasher, 6 BRA, 22 BR cartridges. The bolt has modified Borden bumps to aid in cycling in the dirty environment. The pictured action shows our standard bolt handle and tear drop knob. Production models will feature a handle that is threaded on the end so individuals can use their preferred knobs. I have been one of the individuals that developed the bolt timing and neutral handoff with the trigger for competition shooting to minimize rifle upset in the bags when closing the bolt. These actions will be available with either the neutral timed handoff or with about .03 to .035 inch cock on close. The cock on close option has much easier bolt lift that seems to be favored by PRS competitors. For now the bolts will have spiral flutes but future versions will have diamond flutes as an option. Development work will be done to also handle the .223 Rem and the PPC family.”

While threading metric, you can certainly disengage the halfnut while retracting the threading tool, just reverse direction of the spindle and re-engage the halfnut on the same number you were on as it rotates back to your mark. As long as you are on the same revolution on the thread dial you will not loose your timing on the threading pass. It works very well doing it this way and you can thread 'traditionally' with that one exception.
