Custom Gun Case

My new 6MM BR is going to be seeing a lot of travel and I'd like to have a custom case made for it. Specifically having the foam cut to fit the profile of the rifle and the exterior made of something indestructable.
I've never heard of such beast, but there must be someone making one.

Twud, When I had my gun built, I bought a Storm case. If you lay the gun where you want it and tape the profile of the gun, you can pull the foam out and cut out inside of the tape with a good sharp fillet or small butcher knife and if your careful you'll be good to go. I also cut out an area away from the gun for my bolt. It only took about 30 minutes. One thing you don't want to do is leave the gun stored in the case with the case standing, the weight of the gun will bear down on the foam and damage it over time, personal experience, but you can get new foam:rolleyes:). I think the Storm case is one of the better travel cases you can get, it's tough as nails.....Bob.

There was a company at the SHOT Show that is making a molded case from Carbon Fiber. I was very impressed with the cases. Expensive but worth it if you are traveling a lot and have valuable firearms.

If you are looking for a really sturdy case, google up Bear Country Containers. Their cases are built like a brick s***-house. They also make horse pack panniers. On their home page there are links to some of the torture testing that they have done. They took one of their panniers to Alaska, smeared the inside with peanut butter and fish and let 5 grizzlys go at them for hours. Some pretty incredible photos.

I ordered a custom sized rifle case from them a few weeks ago. Although it will probably be some time in March before it's done, I have a friend who has their cases and they are very, very nice. The owner of BCC, Jerry Kawasaki, told me that what really sets their cases apart, aside from the stout construction, is the type of "memory" foam he uses.

If they will stand up to a 850# grizzly, I don't think your average baggage handler, no matter how determined or ticked-off, has much of a chance...

Kalispel also makes some nice cases.

I have a bear track case I used to use for my Silhouette pistols. They are well built, but expensive, since Freedom Arms took them over. I'd get a pelican and not look back. I have used my pelican 1750 case for hunting trips out of state and the baggage monkeys haven't been able to destroy it yet.

I used a Pelican when I was traveling to matches 20-30 times a year. Over the course of three years, I think the airlines broke my case three or four times. I never had a rifle damaged, but they somehow managed to take a sizeable chunk out of it each time.

I've used my SKB the last couple of times I flew with a rifle, but if I ever started traveling seriously again, I'd get a Storm. It's a lot lighter than a Pelican and, they claim, stronger. However, the baggage handlers seem to be pretty ingenious. I'm sure they'd find some way to break that also.

I avoid the aluminum cases only because when they get crushed, bent, beat up, and have a latch or two broken off, the airlines consider it "normal" wear and tear. They have a rather strange idea of what "normal" is.
