Custom dies

I'm in the process of building a new benchrest gun and thinking of going with custom dies. What are you're thoughts on witch dies. Been thinking on ordering a wilson blank and having my smith cut it with same reamer for the seater but didnt know if i should do the same for the neck or have whidden do them. You're thoughts are greatly appreciated
Thanks Richard

Send some fired brass to whom every you choose, all are great, and they'll match your chamber..

Harrells, JLK, and Neil Jones as well as others that escape me will be able to do what you want.....

Sending fired cases is what i do.....BTW. i own custom Whidden dies too.....

+1. I'd go with Harrel or Whidden. Either makes superb dies. I'm told Neil Jones also makes great custom dies.

Since you have your own gunsmith, he can make you a FL sizer and seater die with the reamer he used. You can have him get a Newlon blank or whatever blank that he uses and make the sizer on that, and he can make you a seater die out of a piece of barrel. Sid Goodling has made me about 6 seater dies out of a piece of heavy barrel.

How are you making a sizer die from the same chamber reamer? Seater die, not a problem, but sizing?

Could some one answer a question? How do they "match your chamber" and allow for spring back? Always wondered. Thanks, Josh.

My seating dies are made from Wilson die blanks, cut with the chamber reamer.

Seating dies are either cut with a SEPERATE, smaller reamer, or by sending fired brass to have dies made to it...

I use Newlon Precision sizing dies for the dies that I have had cut with my sizing die reamers.

I have Harrells, Neil Jones, and Whidden custom sizing dies as well......

I have always said the seating does not have case body support and I have always said seating a bullet into the neck of the case while it is jammed in to a die that has been cut with the chamber reamer can cause the neck to wad up, fold and collapse; and then there is getting the case out of the die if someone manages to seat a bullet. There was a time seating bullets was so easy the reloader could do it with a universal seating die and a sack full of seating plugs. I made a seater, I call it a seater because it does not have a die body.

My opinion it is most important to keep the bullet straight with the case neck. I have seater dies, I have a Gold Medal and a Competition seating die that keeps the case neck centered with the bullet when the ram is raised. Seating with those dies is effortless. I also have bushing type seating dies that are at least 40+ years old that do a good job.

And then it comes to making a sizing die with the same reamer; it has been done, it is not my job to convince anyone it can. And then there are dies that were made and have never been seen since except by a very few people.

And the reason for this is?

By measuring your cases, and allowing doing back at the top end, and sizing the bottom end...?

If you own the reamer, nothing.....

Just measure and check...

So, if you don't own the reamer and the 'smith no longer has it...You are out of luck!? I wanted a custom die bad but, my fear was quickly shooting out my barrel.
