Custom Dies, where to get?

A friend of mine and myself are looking are interested in custom dies. The round he's looking at doing is a .338 Edge aka .338/300 ultra mag. It is my understanding that your just buying blank dies and using your chamber reamer to finish them. Is this correct? What are some companies that make these? Do you get a sizing die, neck die and seater? And one more thing, whats the typical cost of a set of these?

Thanks Jerid

You will not be able to use a reamer that you did your chamber with, to make a sizing die, it would be the same as your chamber, and wouldn't be able to resize it once it grew a little. The seater is no problem.
Wilson is well know for there seater, and neck dies, and you can buy blanks from them for whatever you need..

Neil Jones makes full length bushing dies from your fired brass, as will Warner tool, but you'll be paying for dies that are perfectly set up for your rifles chamber, and they do get a little pricey @ well over $200.00, and the Warner is over $400.00.
The machine work on either maker is as good as it gets...

Thanks for the reply. After looking over those sites, looks as if getting custom dies is a little more than just calling them and saying "I want this".

I think im going to have to do a little more reasearch on this.

Blackhawk95,

Yes you can. My smith had a F/L size reamer.

http://newlonprecision.com/ make the blanks. http://www.northeastcoating.com/ can do the harden coating Ti N low temp. I just had one done.

Do you really need a custom made die? RCBS and Redding make dies for the 338 EDGE. You can also get them from Defensive Edge for cheaper. He reams the 300 RUM FL and Seater for a 338 neck.

Many people also just use 338 RUM dies. Use the FL die to size the neck and bump the shoulder. The seater works too.

Those Newlon dies look awesome!! The .338 edge is for my friend, and after more research I found you wouldnt have to have the custom dies.

But for me, I have always liked doing something a little different. And was curious as to where you would get the dies for a custom cartridge.

I noticed PTG has there chamber reamers listed and next to them a sizing die reamer. Im guessing if you went with a custom round, you would get both reamers. One for chambering the gun, and use it to make the neck die and seater. and the other reamer would be used for the sizing die.

Thanks alot for all the help.

I just sent Neil Jones a few fired cases and awaiting my new sizer for my 260 so I cannot comment yet on them.

Give him a call, he's been doing this for a long time, good guy to talk to.

When you have those Neil Jones dies in your hand your going to be very impressed with them and what they do..
