It was a trial and tribulation when I wanted some 'special' dies for my 338/378 build. I 'assumed' that nearly every die maker would have something to offer. Well, they do although usually not in stock but special order.

Jim Carstensen (JLC Precision), John Whidden and Alan Warner probably make the best dies available. But don't forget that the other die makers now usually have a custom department which will work with you to create the dies you need. Some are simple while other get complex and cost many dollars. Try any and all of the standard makers to see what they can do for you. Forster is one I've used in the past. I did get a set of Redding's from Brownells that were in stock and worked until my customs came.

But when I need something a little out of the ordinary, I call Carrie at Whidden to order dies. I can send them a print or dummy cartridges + a print to get what I need. Usual wait time is 6 weeks approximately and can change depending on when you get in line.

Best of Luck!

Warner dies are pricey and take about 3 months to have your die body/custom inserts delivered. However, the precision is second to none and the adjustability with the built in shim stack makes very fine adjustments a snap. My runout on 6.5 x55 BJAI and 6.5 Creedmoor cases are 0.001" or slightly less without using an expander mandrel.

You have to decide if you desire this level of precision (do you really need it??) or is the money best spent elsewhere? I don't have inserts for my hunting cartridges but do use it for my three competition chamberings. I would not give mine up......period.

I didn't know Whidden does not do a radius shoulder.
But for others reading this thread my Whidden dies produce a loaded round between .0005 and .0007 at less than $300 one heck of a value

Remember you need a press with 1.250X12TPI thread.

I should add don't expect the impossible from any die set, if your chamber isn't up to it the dies can only do so much

2 photos of the Warner die.

The inserts are custom fitted to your brass body and the other insert is the neck bushing. The good part is the ability to change the inserts for different cartridges.

Important point...I had mine in a Rockchucker first and now it is in a Redding Big Boss. The Rockchucker with a Hornbady Lock N load insert is now my 'second operation' press.....decap, bullet pulling etc.

Robin,

I am considering obtaining a Warner die, but was planning on using it in my Rockchucker. What was the issue you had using your Rockchucker with the Warner die?

Bob

Bob, no issues at all with the Rockchucker per say. I wanted a dedicated press for the WTC dies so I could leave it set and just change inserts and shims for different chamberings. I, and my father, have other chamberings that we use standard dies for and the need for non-sizing operations so I put the Hornady Lock n Load insert in the chucker. This enables me to put a decap die or the bullet puller in/out of that press quickly. I only bought the Redding Big Boss because it has alittle more 'meat on the bones' but a second RC would have been more than adequate.
