Custom actions that I wish were still made.

One of my first custom actions was a Precision Rifles (aka Rosenthal) action built by Brad Rosenthal and Bob Dodd. Actually, I had two of these and with one, I shot my smallest group in competition. Another action that was great was Dr. Marsh's short aluminum action. It was great and was very well made. For us right-handed shooters, the Stiller P1000 was a great value. It came only as RB/LP/RE and was offered in 1.35" or 1.55". I wish I had one today. Another great action for those who do not glue in their actions is the Kelbly Teddy. Some call it a long Panda, but it certainly was a great action.
The action that I am now shooting was last made in 2005 and it is still very accurate. It is a Stiller Cobra...an aluminum short version of their Viper. Maybe it is just nostalgia, but I miss these actions. I have owned four BAT-actioned competition rifles and I understand that they are dropping the SB and MB models. I have wanted a MB for a Dasher build for a long time, but I am too old to start again. We are certainly blessed to have such diverse options in custom actions.

John Gamutto of Shooter’s News organized a benchrest pistol competition as a prelude to Super Shoot one year. I forget the year as I was there but was one who didn’t compete In the pistol group. It was poorly received and poorly attended. There were some interesting and accurate pistols there but, again, not many. I think Kelbly saw the handwriting on the wall and never really got heavily into the production on pistol bolt actions.

Yeah, old John ran off with a lot of folks money!

An action I really liked was the Bruno...made for Bruno's by McBros Rifles (McMillan).

This one of mine was very nice. Well thought out angles on the locking lugs and lug abuttments made for a very smooth bolt operation. The firing pin was a bayonet style for easy R&R and the trigger timing was right on the money with just a few thou. of cock on close.

Good shootin' :) -Al

I've had a couple Benchmasters by Charlie Williams from an all aluminum with steel inserts to the heavy that had a 2" by 9" long steel receiver that was threaded for a 4"-6" sleeve screwed on the front of it. I still have the big one and I think I gave Nez Rongero the aluminum one.

You got that right Butch.
George Kelbly told me John approached him for a loan as he began to struggle with Shnews, as we called it. George told him he wanted 51% of the company and John refused as he wanted to keep control on Shooter’s News. So, as we know George, that didn’t fly and neither did Shooter’ News.

Yes sir! I only lost the balance of my subscription.

John pushed the “Benchrest Pistol” thing to the limit. Every issue of Shooters News was chocked full of articles surrounding it.
Most Benchrest shooters said…….”what’s the point”.

to James’s point, one of the best actions, (material wise), ever was the original Farleys built on the cast 17-4 Stainless action body in conjunction with the S-7 tool steel bolt.

Two of my favorite rifles are built on these.

Which one pissed you off in New Braunfels that you just gave it away?

There was a Searcy that Stan Ware threatened to chop in half. I took it out of the band saw and hid it from him...true story.

Once he literally rebuilt the entire ignition system, it finally shot well.
