Current consensus, bbl life 260 vs 6.5x47 Lapua?

Wondering how much difference to expect? Considering 5 shot groups, allowing proper cool down, and routine cleaning.

Anyone? Differences with 3-groove vs others in 6.5 bore? Thanks.

We're talking about a capacity difference of less than ten percent. While the smaller cartridge will obviously outlast the larger, the difference isn't enough to get too worried about.

I guess that would depend on what the gun was being used for and one's own definition of top accuracy. I know some guys who replace a barrel after only 1,200 rounds. Personally, I think they're way too anal.

Barrel life can be affected by several factors. From what I've read, improper cleaning practices are the #1 destroyer of barrels. Rapid-fire shooting and overheating runs a close second. Overbore cartridges certainly speed up the decline in accuracy but the .260 and 6.5x47 Lapua have fairly polite expansion ratios. Some people feel that the short neck and 20 degree shoulder of the .260 might contribute to some additional throat damage, aka: sandblast effect). I think there's some merit to that theory but can't prove it.

With proper care, I'd expect around 2000 rounds of competitive accuracy from either chambering. Effective varmint accuracy would probably exceed 3000 rounds. But if you abuse the bore, cut those numbers in half.

Again, the two cartridges are so similar that I wouldn't make my decision based upon barrel life.

Thanks Tommie, bbl life not the factor in cal choice, just wondering what to expect as you guys here have worn out many bbls and should know...appreciate the reply.

That's the problem... not many 'worn out' 6.5x47L barrels yet.

6.5-08 aka .260 Rem generally goes anywhere between 2500-3500rds or more depending on how picky the shooter is,i.e. top competitor will probably pull it sooner than a beginner) and whether the barrel steel is holding up. Sometimes you get one that just tanks early on, and sometimes you get one that just hangs on forever...
