Cryogenic Barrel Treating Vendors

As the title says I'm looking for a business / facility that does Cryo treating rifle barrels in the New York City / New Jersey area. Preferably one that you've dealt with or knows someone that had work done by them and was satisfied with their work. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance for taking the time to reply to my request.

Check some of your local bigger machineshops as quite a few have them. I cant remember who kelblys uses but they have fast turn around. My brother was doing it but we need a load before we would do it.

300 Below in Illinois does good work, quick turn around and no minimums. Had three barrels done so far, all were better after treatment.

I've done it myself with some mineral spirits and dry ice. It gets you to -100F. I used a trough filled with mineral spirits and dry ice. Just submerge the barrel and wait. Hint: If you put the barrel in the freezer overnight it goes faster.

Not close to where you live but Kathy Bond who owns Cryo Plus near Kelblys in Ohio has a super fast turnaround time. She has done 2 barrels for me the last 4 months. 68 bucks a pop includes return shipping and insurance. She puts em in the deep freeze friday nights and after warming them back up sends them back out the first of the week. Highly recommended..

A 2nd for Kathy Bond, It think she is the wife of Hobie Bond, who works for or is retired from Kelblys.

Do a search on this forum. Read up on Cryo before using anybody. Most so called Cryo places do not have the capabilities to do a true Cryo.

I've had many barrels done and the only positive thing that I will say is a barrel chambers better, nothing else.

I have had 1/2 a dozen + barrels done by Hobie and Kathy Bond. I know nothing about the process, but they are great people to deal with and produce a quality produce at a quality price. Every bbl. that I have that has treated cleans smoother, maybe in some part to how I break-in my bbls. But anyone that knows me also knows I don't baby my bbls. To me they are like tires on a race car. Ya gotta heat them up to really get the best out of them. When there done, there done. Replace and repeat. I honestly believe that the cryo treatment extends the useable life of a match grade bbl. I think this is even more so if you shoot and overbore/hotrod cartridge, which I do. I might also mention that I shoot sling/irons, not BR so it's not 5-7 shots, it's 22+. I normally run a string of 22-25 rounds in about 12 min. weather and pit service permitting and 3,100 fps. isn't just chugging along either. Run the numbers. With a pointed 140 JLK, I'm between 20.5 and 21.5 moa at 1K. I believe that cryo'ing my bbls. allows me to do that.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

Lloyd,
Seems you would be better served having your barrels Melonite treated.

Don't mean to hijack but,

I run 20 rounds of 6.5x47 Lapua out of Krieger 316 SS 4 groove barrel in 50 seconds.

Then 2 more relays at 20 rounds each in about 3 min.

This is at one match.

Not including sighters.....usually total 70-80 rounds for the day.

Barrels are not really lasting very long in this competition so, I would entertain anything that would improve throat life.

Will Cryo or Melonite extend the life?

I think Butch is spot on, Except if it machines better it must lap in better..I'm not saying a good barrel builder wouldn't get the same finish regardless.. I would melonite my cryo barrel, invest that kind of money you want to prolong it's life..If that is a big deal then just go with a Krieger..

Last I had done was by Mimi Trutec in Paragould, Arkansas. Joel Kendrick runs the place, a competition shooter, and was probably the first one to do it on competition rifles.

Hey Butch I have been doing some research on this subject. Can you tell me where you find the term true cryo used. The website you posted uses the term deep cryo. I read other places that show industry standard as -180. Maybe you got yours too cold!! I just find it more interesting when knowledgeable people have totally opposite views.

Industry standard -180deg. ? I think if you do a little research, you will find that cryogenic treatment starts at -310F or colder and is the norm. Maybe you need to do a little more research. Tell me, are any barrel makers using cryo at the present?
I did put a barrel in ice water. I'll let you know the results after chambering.

In the old days Ray and for 2 reasons. Customers requested it and it does machine better. Kinda like the 5R barrels. Customers ask for it, but you will not find anybody saying they see any advantage to it.
