cryo treatment

Yes, just about everyone has an opinion. Whoops. You asked if anyone has a proven opinion. The answer to that one is no.

If anybody does, Kreiger barrels does since they Cryo ALL their barrels.
They do it because it makes them easier to do the cut rifleing on. I think on their web page they talk about Cryo in regard to this. I think the juries still out in regard to accuracy though, but who knows.

I understand that Krieger cryo's their steel before the rifling process. From a metallurgical standpoint I understand why. There are volumes of clinical laboratory studies to show that cryo treatment serves to align the intergranular orientation of the steel and relax any inherent stress in the grain boundaries of the steel. This leads to easier machining and a stress free barrel. What I haven't found in any of the literature is how cryo treatment, after a barrel has been rifled, increases accuracy or reduces fouling. Until I see a scientific and definitive study for the benefits of cryo treatment, after a barrel has been rifled, I will remain a skeptic.

There are quite a few myths floating around the accuracy circuit. The quest for accuracy involves proven facts and the application thereof.

My one and only experience with cryo was with a Rem 700 VSF factory barrel that would not shoot. When it came back, accuracy was unchanged, very poor for 22-250), but it did seem to clean easier. That 700 took a walk soon thereafter.
