In one month we leave for our winter digs in FL. Been busy with the stuff that needs to get done in and around the house. Not much regular time spent in the field. Finally took some R&R late this afternoon to hit the places I've been hunting all spring and summer. Except for one on a lucky spot, I would have been skunked.
As I was leaving via the rear entrance of the property owned by the landscaper, I glassed a nearby field where I know the owner cuts hay and spotted a ghog head sticking out of the fairly high grass. 125 yds.
Got the 17 HMR out of the case in the back seat, loaded a clip with 20 gr hp and started looking for the critter in my scope. I found it, but the nice profile had been replaced with what looked like the back of its head. Took my time and pulled the trigger. Heard the familiar whack and down went the ghog.
Drove the truck into the field and over to where I shot. Found two holes, but no ghog. Moved the grass aside from one of the holes and there it was staring up at me. Saw lots of blood in the hole, but not sure if it's dead. Reached in a gave the thing a poke. No movement. Whew! Grabbed a leg and hauled it out for the picture. Looks like the shot went through the base of the skull.
