Crows...

OK Guys,

I have just finished running in my new 6br 1:10 barrel and I am off this weekend to give it a run in the bush.,pic attached)

It is lambing season and apparently the crows are giving the poor little buggers heaps so they are high on my proirities.

I have an assortment of Vmax's to try, but i am wondering if anyone can give me a bit of a headstart, my initial thoughts are 58gr Vmax's should do the trick nicely, but I also have 65 and 75 Vmax's in the cupboard as well.

Has Anyone been using the 58's and if so what load are you running.

Cheers

Muzza

Muzza,
Great looking gun, what stock and action are you using?

In the south we Shoot crows over decoys using mouth calls. Most of the time we are shooting in pecan orchards.

Don't use rifles, shotguns only.

What are the crows doing to the lambs?

Hi Chuck,

The action is a Shilen DGA, the stock is a laminated copy of a fibreglass shilen thumbhole stock. There are a few improvements that have been made such as reduced drop in the butt and a 1/2" flat on the underside of the butt, the stock has also been hollowed to reduce a bit of weight - basically just moderising it a bit.

The crows peck the eyes of of the newborn lambs and then wait for them to die.. not a nice way to go...Bloody crows.

Any tips on a load for the 58's, i can't wait to turn them into a ball of feathers...

Cheers

I know what you mean Muzza- the way they just explode in a cloud of feathers when you hit them right is just awsome.

Best shot I ever pulled of on one- it was perched on the birthing ewe waiting for the lamb- at about 135 yards I hit it and didn't hit the ewe- cloud of feathers and the ewe crapped itself and pumped out the lamb quick smart.

.223 with 50 HP.
I plan on using the V-max 65's in my 6 BR.

Muzza,
I had no idea about the pecking their eyes out. That is horrible, good luck on killing everyone of them. Take some pictures and post them please.

In my 6BR with a 12 twist barrel I use 34 gr Varget or 32.5 grains of H322 with 55 Blitzkings and 58 V Max bullets. Both shoot great and with good velocity,3500 +). H322 might just take a little more cleaning than the Varget.

G'day Muzza,

I tried all 4 weight 6mm V-max's in my 1:8 twist 26" 6BR

I only used Varget,AR2208) with Lapua Brass.

With the 58's, I could put 35.5grn into the case and get 3560fps. That was as much powder as would fit into the case without excessive crushing and didn't show any pressure signs for me. It should provide the terminal effect you are looking for. It may be possible to get more velocity with a faster powder but I didn't feel the need to try.

With 65's, 34.0 gave 3425fps and slightly better accuracy.

With 75's, 32.5 gave 3200fps and much better accuracy.

With 87's, 31 gave 2900fps but that was well below max pressure and I ran out of time to finish the work-up on that bullet. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get it 3000-3100fps and still run safe pressures.

If I were shooting them within 200 metres, I'd take the fastest load and watch them explode. The accuracy was sufficient for crows at that range. If going further than that, I'd have used the 75's.

Hi Guys,

Thanks Ed and Greg, that is the sort of velocities I was hoping for from the 58's, that should give me the effect I am after. I'll take the 75's as well if they get a bit skitish and I need to take some longer shots.

Keep posting your loads if you have them.

Cheers

Muzza,
My 1:14 Hart 6BR loves the following recipes:
1) 65 grn. Hornady V-Max or 65 grn. Berger MEF touching lands, 34.5 grn. Varget, CCI 450 small mag. primer. Velocity approx. 3400 ft/s. Fluffs rogue crows rather nicely.

2) The same above bullets with 31.0 grn. N135 with Federal Match primer. Velocity approx. 3250 ft/s. Both recipes very accurate.

Crows are now in for PA. only Fri., Sat., and Sun. until November.
