crowning: dish or recess

i am in the process of building a new palma rifle from a barnard
action and a true-flite barell.what kind of crowning do you think is the best? dish or recess?

thank's
trs.

I'm with Butch, don't mean a thing as far as accuracy. I cut flat crowns on my match barrels, but then, they are well taken care of. I cut recessed crowns on field rifles as they ten to get bumped around a bit more.

There are two reasons to counter bore your crowns. The first is that it protects the actual crown. This is also a negative as the crown is more difficult to keep clean. If one does not keep it clean, one will encounter fliers and irratic groups. A second reason for counterboring the crown is it allows for the barrel to be set up on a live center and the crown not be disturbed while barrel is final polished.

Most gunsmiths and shooters seem to agree that a stress free even surface crown will produce the best groups.

I personally like a recessed crown on my competition rifles even though the straight cut is currently in vogue with most BR gunsmiths. On a field rifle I think it is imperative to recess the crown for that little bit of added protection.
