Cream of.......Corn meal! Forming Dasher

I can not find traditional cream of wheat locally and I got impatient and bought some corn meal to fire form some dasher brass. Other than a dirty mess in my barrel, and residue left on the case necks, it worked. Barrel scrubbed clean easy enough.

Is there a reason that everyone uses cream of wheat specifically? Does it do this job in a cleaner fashion?

I haven't found any at stores either..
But I use oat meal grounded on my coffee grinder...

Cream of wheat or not"..it still makes a mess.

I've still got 3/4's of a box of cream o wheat from last summer when I was fire forming a bunch of cases. Try malt o meal. Probably work the same...

make sure you scrub those cases...that stff will inpact and stay on the case walls.
i never use it...ff with fast pistol powder and a tissue wad

Does oatmeal leave burnt residue on your necks?

I've used powdered mashed potatoes as well. Works just the same.
No sir, No burnt residue on the neck's.
Easy to clean, I fire form 5 cases and a quick patch down the barrel.

I dip my fire form brass on soap hot water to wash out the residue..
Works fine for me!

The problem is it gets baked in behind the shoulders. If youre using a faster powder and you can overcharge the case with it you can blow it up. Its not needed and is dangerous to use. Always be aware. Its not worth it.

So I was using 12-13 grains of Win 231 and filled the rest of the case with corn meal. You're saying just put the same charge of powder in and cap it with tissue?

Ive never used 231 but it appears to be slower than clays or bullseye alot of guys use. Youll need to experiment with it until it fills out the shoulder enough you can go with it. I suspect youll need more. If you just start going up youll see where it works good without excess usage

show us clear pics of the shoulders of these fire formed cases.
as was mentioned in powder only its is on the low side.
like all things you need to work up to what gives a nice shoulder.

I will have to try this without my House of Autry corn meal, sure saves a mess! Thanks to all that recommended no filler! Dang, old dog can learn new tricks!

I happen to have a supply of 231. For a 6mmBRA, I use about 15 grains or so topped with a tuft of polyfill (or TP as others have suggested) and that's all. I never saw the need to use cream of wheat or other filler.
