crazy 6.5x47 load!!

KINDA-NEW-GUY

Proud Armenian from TEXAS
So I was at the local shooting range in cali, trying to destroy the steel targets with my .338 LM and some dynamic research solids. I'm getting my 6.5x47 built in TX as we speek.
Long story short, some guy had a savage in 6.5x47 and I decided to ask if I could give it a shot. He was shooting 140gr sierras. And he said he had a federal SR primer, and 38 gr of varget.. it shot amazingly well and had very mild recoil, and no sticky bolt or severe pressure signs. Seems to me like this is a bit on the hot side for this bullet. I could be wrong. Just trying to feel what a good load would be to start for my stick. Sorry to blabber on. Thanks for the input

Most folks probably thought you were gonna give a recipe for a perfect 6.5x47 load. As far as input goes, remember that every rifle is different and that that load my be way over the top for your rifle. Start low and see what happens when you work towards his load.

Ok, I will give you my 2cents worth... It is my opinion that bullets up to 130grains would be BETTER served by powders in the Varget / RL-15 / N140 range.. Does that mean that they WON"T work on heavier projectiles? Hardly, they will work. However powders at the slower end of the spectrum like H4350 / N550 etc would be better suited for bullets in the 140gr range. Having said all that, I do believe that his load it a might on the warm side. My guesstimate would be that once summer rolls around you had better have a new pile of brass 'cause he's going to need it... just my 2 cents..

Thanks shootdots. Sorry guys. Should have worded the header a bit different. It's easier for me to find H4350 than it is to find 6.5x47 load data. So I will definately put some up as soon as I get to molest my gun.

Rule #1 in reloading for a new cartridge, always research the cartridge till you find a true starting point like in our cartridge guide and reduce by 10 percent.Safety first and read all you can about the cartridge at hand instead of taking someone's word for it.The internet is a good tool although there are alot of handloaders who want speed over safety, they are nuts.Google your new cartridge and you will be reading for a good while and we can help you too in the near future. By the way welcome to the forum and never forget safety first!

Johnbearman, I have been blown up a few times, and my brain kinda sloshes around in my skull. But I can't seem to find any kind of data in the cartridge guide section for the 6.5x47 category. Any help would 've greatly appreciated

You can always see what others are messin with here: http://www.reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=549
With a quick scan here, he was probably gettin ~2700-2750fps

I just don't see the cartridge as designed for heaviest in cal, longest competition ranges.
Seems like the perfect mid-range, 123-130gr cartridge, which I believe it was designed for.

I load my 6.5 x 47 with 38.0grs of RL-15 and 123 SMK's... They are traveling at a modest 2985f.p.s.,,, It is my "primary" 600 yard F-Open rifle... It drills out there!!

the 6.5x47 with 123gr bullets can easily achieve 3100 fps (30 inch barrel) however I like the 130gr vlds at around 2965 fps, but my best 1000yd recorded group was with the 123gr scenars at 3033 fps, I too use R 15, 38.6grs for 1000yd shooting, for 600yd shooting 38grs is fine, I think a lot of people underestimate this little cartridge dooley

My first 6.5x47 barrel I shot 37.7g of Varget with 140g JLKs, it did 2910 fps from my 30" barrel. I shot the same 200 cases in that barrel until I lost Fclass precision (around 1600 rounds). That load hammered at that velocity and I had no pressure signs.

I shoot 40.2g of H4350 with my new barrel with 140 JLKs/Hybrids and have shot multiple cleans with that load.

The 6.5x47 just isn't picky.
