Craters and small diameter firing pins. photos

carlsbad

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
I had some brass on the bench that show the benefits of bushing your firing pin nominal and thought I'd post them.

First photo is 338 LM fired from a stock Remington 700 with the stock bolt and firing pin. Load is fairly hot but acceptable. I believe the 300 bergers were about 2650 fps with this load. No hard bolt lift.

The second photo of of some 308 I fired during load development. It was too hot. The primers a flattened to fill the primer pocket. The bolt was hard to extract. The GAP 4S brass (6.5 SAUM) is my current load. 61 grains of H1000, 140 berger, 3050 fps. No pressure signs. Both of these bolts are bushed to .062/.059. Both loads are as hot or hotter than the 338 LM above but no craters.

Thank you for posting these photos. Some folks still wonder if bushing the firing pin does help reduce cratering. When done right, indeed it does. We recommend Greg Tannel, www.gretanrifles.com for the job:

I recommend Greg too. He has unselfishly posted a lot of videos and will help you if you call him. I hear he has a backlog right now.

A lot of other good gunsmiths on the forum aren't taking small jobs right now because of rifle build backlog--their work speaks for itself.

Whoever you choose to bush your firing pin, make sure they align the bolt in 2 axes. You don't want a boltface that is not normal to (perpendicular to) the chamber. Gunsmithing 101 but not everyone understands it.
