Coyotes ...

Live in SC Kansas - along OK border.

Up until 2 weeks ago we were dry as a bone in the middle of the mohave.

Over the last couple of years the coyote population has really increased.

Anyone else seeing this as well?

Here in the people's republic of Illinois, all the deer hunters noticed a dramatic increase in coyote population in November & December. Waited till deer season was over and have blasted 4 & missed 2.
One thing we have noticed is that sightings in late in the am are more frequent. 2 days ago, I had 2 run out in front of my car at first light just outside of town. Took my bud hunting yesterday and he used my 7mag w/140 bergers. (My 2 yote rifles are still at gunsmith's after 23 months!! :( I barked a yote to stop with the sun to our back. In the sitting position, he drilled him while the yote was facing us At 320 yards Right in the head! . JFK'ed him. (lost the back of his head).
Took him to the fur buyer/wasn't worth anything. It's getting warmer and they are Loosing their hair. That won't stop me from thinning them out tho!

It varies just like any population. Although, the areas I hit year after year seem to have been low on population the last 10 years.

I come down from Ohio in Feb/Mar each year with my brother to hunt around Haviland. So much different than coyote hunting up here! This will be our 4th year.

The best time to hunt coyotes is right after the parents kick the pups out of the den. This is late July, through the month of August. They are uneducated, respond to a call readily in multiples. Kill every one you can. Fawn killers.

After hunting season, they are smart as Einstein.

Pelts are worthless where I live. Next one I skin will be a Black Coyote, which are NOT rare here. Coyotes are decimating our deer crop here. Trappers are allowed to sell live coyotes with a permit to houndsmen, $75 is the going rate. So the population gets transplanted around quite a bit.

S.C. Fish and Game put a camera out by a coyote den a few years ago, and one pair of coyotes brought 22 dead fawns to the den for the pups to eat!

Winter coyotes from both the Mexican and Canadian borders look nice around the house.
