coyotes at night, LIGHT advide needed

Red works the best, well other than lots of money on thermals and night vision. They don't seem to pick up on the red near as much.

White they lock up and run.

Green you can see better and farther than red but they appear to be able see it easier than red. Ive had a few that once you light them up they bolt and others that they try to look through it but they can see the light

In my experiance red is the way to go it usually doesnt bug them unless its reflecting wierd off the snow (especially with a layer of ice on the snow)

I used red lights for a while, with very limited success. I used red to scan and shoot. I finally moved to a thermal scanner and thermal scope. There is a big difference between hunting (with red lights) and killing with thermal.

I never had any sucess at all with lights here in the Eastern US. Didn’t matter the color. Usually they would run sometimes as if they were shot at. I read somewhere that the reason most people have used red lights is because the human eye doesn’t respond by diallating the pupils therefore when you turn the light off the hunters aren’t temporarily blind from the bright light. Night Vision is the ultimate with thermal being a good pick as well. Downfall of some thermals is positive target ID.

Red, keep it on and scan constantly, be surprised and what can come in and be on way out before you turn it back on for a look

How about the kill light on the scope. Would white light be better?
When we used to use the aircraft landing lights, it seemed like when you dropped full beam on them they stopped for the shot.

I've used green when I shoot permitted deer and the Streamlight I use is good for 200 yards. I killed one coyote with it this summer who was in the wrong place at the wrong time (I wasn't hunting). The one I killed was one of two and the second would run a little and look back - to see if his/her mate was following.

But, that is a long way to say that any animal, coyote deer, bobcat, etc, can be vary weary of shadows cast by the light if you move it around carelessly. I usually drop the light down so shadows are not moving toward the animal and that seems to work well.

We always used red scanning and shooting, one man ran the light and call and 1 or 2 shooters just turned it all the way up when the shooter was ready and the yote got stopped. If one was coming in at a good pace you could brighten it up all the way the yote didn’t pay it any attention

I have used all 3 colors and not found too much difference, the trick is to not blast them in the face with a bright beam but point mostly up in the air and get the lower edge of the beam to pick up their eyes, then ease them into more light if they will take it.

Seems more likely to have a negative reaction when I'm in trees or brush, then when I put a red light on coyote in open fields. Around my area a white light will spook coyote and fox, raccoon are a toss up about white light. I could not see better with green so I haven't tried shooting with it.

Red light and never turn it off. If you have a light with a dimmer switch, that's even better. Turn it down fairly low to scan & then turn it up to shoot. Most all less experienced coyote hunters that I've hunted with want to run a light that is too bright. It doesn't take much light to catch an eye at night.
