Coyotes and Coffe

I know that coyotes have an excellent sense of smell and will turn and run at the faintest scent of a human. But, I was wondering if food smells, like coffee, would scare them.

Mouthwash, cigarettes, laundry detergent, etc. will all scare them in the wild if the are well trained but the ones that come around my house are used to people as they hunt pets thru the neighborhood. Very similar to hunting whitetail deer.

I read an article years ago where a very successful hunter had injured himself and had applied BenGay with wintergreen scent. He claimed he saw more coyotes when he used the smelly stuff and tested the theory by eating the candy lifesaver wintergreen mints and supported that coyotes were attracted to or curious about the wintergreen scent. . While not coffee.. it is a better cover scent than fox urine if you track it into the house.

my experience is it all depends on where you are hunting them. I've shot many coyotes on the local beaches for pest control and never tried to be quiet, mask smells, or really try to conceal anything. We've sat in the back of a pickup truck bed talking, smoking cigars, and popping coyotes coming to a call.

Then move 20 miles inland to a famers field and you have to park and walk .5 mile in so they don't hear your car door close or they high tail it out of there as well as be in full camo and cover scent.

Exactly ! Urban coyotes know what humans smell like and it usually means food is close by but the wild dogs know those smells = trouble for them.

Man you need to find a better grade of wintergreen. Maybe that stuff the older boys on the playground said was wintegreen "Here try some!" was not wintergreen.

I saw a hunt (can’t remember if YouTube or one TV) but they where doing predator control for yotes down In Cape Cod,MA I think and it was awesome to watch.

As far as trapping, you’re not gonna fool they’re nose. They’re gonna know that you were there. They’ll still work the set if there’s not too much human scent and the attractor peaks they’re interest. If you’re in a hunting situation and they smell your coffee, they’ve already got a whiff of you also.

If the coyote can smell anything out of the ordinary, it will get suspicious. Use of wind and terrain will do more to put coyotes in front of you than any attempt to fool his nose.

35yrs ago I raced RC cars. I had an RC-10. Lol. Everyone would put wintergreen oil on the foamy rubbr tires. I think it was for traction, can't remember now. Anyway, you could smell that oil inside the race track building before even opening the door. So, douse a rag with that wintergreen oil and place it on a pole with a game camera monitoring. See what happens.
