Cowboy Benchrest , new shooting sport

Not sure what you mean ? Ive seen 22 lr get mushroomed and 'stuck' in the rough exterior of cinder blocks ( bricks )

How far in did the bullet get? Like you mean the tip part got stuck in the block, and the mushroom part was out of the wall?

It's funny. Competition with 22's and air rifle ended up being a huge equipment race like all other competitions. When the word competition is used things get serious even if there's no more then cheap wood plaques for a prize.

Some time ago it was opined on Benchrest Central about starting up a competition for factory rifles only. It didn't take long for people to figure out that Cooper and 40x's as well as other high end offerings are Factory.

It might be interesting to compete with cast bullets in any caliber loaded in brass cases sub sonic. That way people could compete with what they have and not start over so to speak. However any competition one can think up is going to be taken quite seriously by those that really want to compete. No matter what type of equipment it is, state of the art is still expensive even in muzzle loaders.

One of the most daunting factors in any competition is sometimes overlooked. I have found that travel to and from competitions to be expensive and time consuming as well. In the west and particular Texas competitions are a pretty good distance apart.

It would be great to have more ranges spring up so more people could be introduced to the wonderful sport of shooting but that gets political and political is ugly and uncomfortable. That's the way liberals like it. It keeps the competition down.

I raced horses years ago and they had a solution to the insanity of big bucks. It is called a claiming race. A value is put on the horses and if one wins too many races you can claim it for the value of the race. If you had a competition that had a $1000 value and the same person and gun won it all the time, you could come up with the $1000 and the gun would be yours and the old owner got the $1000. Then if you wanted to have a better class of guns have a $1500 class or any value you wanted. You could even make it exclude the scope and rings if you wanted.

@ebb
Where is the purse money going to come from?
If generated from shooters match fee's, would be added expense to the shooters, hence no savings.

Bullets don't penetrate , they mushroom , the 22 lr is soft lead , when it mushrooms it conforms to the irregular surface and sticks . Like taking soft modeling clay and stitching it to the side of a coarse surface , it'll stay .

Don't some bullets go through brick?

You misread or I screwed up writing it. The prize is what ever you want it to be the entry fee can be nothing. However if you want to shoot in the cheap class you must agree that anyone who wants to claim your rifle can own it for the claim amount. The class is based on the worth of the rifle, say $1000. If you win 2 or 3 matches and some one decides the gun is worth more than $1000, then the some one can give you $1000 and the rifle is theirs. If they want shoot it in a $2000 class then OK , if they put it back in a $1000 class you can buy it back. No one is going to spend $3000 at the gunsmith to beat the $1000 dollar class guys cause the gun won't be his long.

If you ever want to have a fair match that is the way it will be or some one will have $10,000 rifle to win fake wood. I was interested in a service rifle match years ago, so I went with a friend. Some at the match had rifle that were so far from a stock rifle, that no one was allowed to touch them. The hand guards were bedded and if you touched them it would ruin the accuracy. Is this a service rifle, I hardly think so. If you want to have a service rifle match have the club buy 20 rifles and draw lots as to which one you get to shoot with.

There are already black-powder matches from 600-1000 yards using Sharps-type rifles chambered in old calibers, like 50-90 and 45-100. I think these would absorb a large portion of the interest in precision black powder target rifle. Shooters might drag out old schutzen rifles for short-range shooting but these are buried in collections all over the place, not just floating around on the market.

It almost sounds like you're suggesting a black-powder version of IR 50/50. To me, that sounds like a pretty small population to pick from.

Not really , I'm trying to start a 100 yd lead bullet 38 special , 45 long colt
Bolt action , single shot using inexpensive small ring actions or obsolete bolt actions and low vel bullets ( low noise ) at 100 yds ( a little far for the 38 special )
It's just an idea I'm trying . We need more young shooters ( younger than me ) and are losing ranges . F class is great but noise and property is limiting its growth down here

Perhaps a case volume/velocity/caliber restriction would be appropriate?

Just thinking out loud . . . .
