couple neck turning ?'s

i haven't ever done any neck turning, but i think i am going to start to squeeze all the accuracy potential out of my rifle. i have a few questions though.
1 why do i need to expand the neck before turning?
2 do i have to resize afterward?
3 i use a forester trimmer and wandered if anyone uses the forester "neck turning attachment" rather than the typical sinclair style neck turning tool.
4 how do i know how far back to cut? all the way to the shoulder?

i am just trying to get my neck tension as consistant as possible to eliminate some vertical
thanks in advance
joe

Hi Joejo
Well, welcome to the canteen Joejo, just like you, involved(ordered 21st century turner and mandrels, expander dies the whole gig, expecting delivery within 2 or3 weeks) and concerned, but don't know a wink about it except for what I gather from these excessively learned and authorised gents on this here site...I would like to ask one opinion of you though since you're using the Forster trimmer I'm also expecting;how does it work, are you pleased with it?Up to now I've been quite happy with the Lee trimmer that is absolutely accurate and efficient, albeit caliber specific and "unsettable",so I'm hoping that the Forster will allow me better control over my future trim lengths,I know their tools are generally well made and finished, even though a few comments might need be made on their bullet pullers and collets...Thanks in advance Joejo, and best of luck with it.

Needs some basic info. What is the caliber you're dealing with? What size brass are you going to use to create your wildcat [necking up for that purpose ... right?]. Custom or Factory action?

Hi guy's I been neck turning for about 12 years and i still dont know everything. I have a forester neck turner and have a few mandrels for it for some stuff but havent touched it for years. I have a k&m neck turner i have used it for years but was kind of looking for a reason to try maybe something better so i just got a 21st century neck turner.
they are all different and you need to learn to use them..The reason for the expander iron is to slightly expand the neck to uniform it and also size it for a good fit to the turner mandrel. you have to have a good fit to the turner mandrel to get a accurate turn. where as the forester set up the mandrel are are set up undersized so a resized case will fit them,at least i think so if my memory is correct and it works but is not super accurate.
You really need to know what your neck diameter in your chamber is so you dont take too much off your brass.
So kind a really need to know what case and what rifle your tunring for, to really be of any help to you.

1. yes
2. I would
3. I have but I won't
4. I turn all the way to the shoulder, far enough that the leading angle on the cutter makes a very light cut on the shoulder.

In the past, I have tested turned against unturned in a factory chamber, and did not find any advantage to turning. Tell us about your rifle and reloading equipment.

the gun is a stiller action with a kreiger 8 twist 28 inch hv contour, throated for 123 scenars, although i am shooting 130 bergers now.
i use lapua brass
its a 260 rem, no wildcat for me

as far as reloading equipment...
i throw charges with a chargemaster and check 10 percent on an old 10/10 scale.
i use a single stage press with a lee collet die and a forester micrometer seater
chamfer and debur cases with a basic vld reamer from lyman
i have a reading neck sizer but found the lee seems to make more concentric sized cases.

Hi again Joejo

Thanks for the answer,Jonbearsman's got me a bit worried about it but then again I don't think i should be concerned about the whole stuff before I get it out of customs and give it a go..Anyway I hope I can ask you for advice if I need any, which I don't doubt, and one we've smoothed it out,it'll surely be a breeze...I've had good results and service so far with Forster so it'll surely continue, especially with such an accuracy demanding tool.Goo'day mate.
