Cost to nitrite an action

Scalloper

A couple of months ago I bought a SS custom action for a build. I really wanted nitrite but this was the only one I could find that was ready to ship. I contacted the company that built the action and was quoted $300 + shipping to get it nitrite coated. This seems ridiculously high considering they are both priced the same on their site.
What are other options?
Thanks

Look up Balzers, they do a lot of commercial nitriding. The issue you may run into is most of these nitriding shops don't have a FFL and really don't want an action in house over night. There is a possibility if there is one close that they might let you drop it off and pick it up the same day. And yes $300 is a joke. We have precision cutters that are 1.5 inch diameter and 8 inches long TICN nitrided for under $40.

We have 6-8 bbls nitrided at a time cause the cost is the same for one or a batch. It is close prohibitive for a single bbl. Assume an action would be the same.

What are the best options to get the SS barrel I have done so it matches? I dont think barrels get nitride do they?
And thanks for all of the help.

That is completely understandable. But I assume you would wait and do several vs only one.

No way I would nitride a barrel just to make it black. To many horror stories. I have personally seen a few myself. Think coating for the barreled action. Cerakote is a good choice imho.

Like WSnyder said, I have recently read that Brian stopped offering the service.

Last year around March I think it was I had H&M West do three Defiance actions and bolts with some misc small parts. They have a minimum fee of $350.

Confirmed that Pucker Factor is not offering nitride service at this time. There must have been a misunderstanding about the nitrided action posted above. He does pre order actions from Defiance that have been nitrided and it sounds like that is likely what is going on.

Middle Branch Machine in Ohio....see Mike.
They have done multiple parts for me. I have also TiNitrided multiple bolts with him and they work fantastic!

You are correct in that u would not nitride a bbl just for the color, it is for the hardening. Our shooting team has been having out competition bbls hardened for several years with great success. The process is especially beneficial for chamberings known for shorter bbl life like 6.5x284, 243 and its variations. We have not experienced any negatives (accuracy wise) from the process.
The only possible negative is there is no setting the bbl back. The surface is too hard. That said the big benefit is extended bbl life. A typical 6.5x284 will see 800-1100 rounds of accurate bbl life. The rifles we have hardened in that chambering are at 1200 rds and bbl throats show minimal cracking and are shooting high X count cleans.
We send 6 bbls at a time to be hardened and that spreads the cost over the whole batch and makes the cost per bbl reasonable.
With the current price of bbls and fitting, the extended bbl life is much appreciated.

Everything is great until a barrel comes back and will not shoot and neither the nitride company nor the barrel manufacturer will warranty it. This is as reported to me by a half dozen of my customers that were not happy campers. To say the least. I am glad it is working well for the team you shoot on. Small groups.

Paul,
I hear what ur saying. My only customer is me so that is a different kettle of fish.
The nitriding process requires that the bbl. has to be broken in before the process is applied. We make sure the bbl shoots before they are sent off for hardening. After the break in, the bore has to be clean.
For u, that is time n money so I can see ur point.
