Benchrest Competetion
Hello all. I am looking for a diagram showing the correct teminology for each section of a brass case. Does anyone know
where I can find this?

Preacher Thank you. I have heard the term heel used is this base? I am assuming the mouth is the leading edge of the neck

Like language, the terms will vary from region to region and, more particularly, from country to country. Most of the bigger loading manuals have a "definitions" section that will describe and illustrate both cartridges and chambers. But be prepared to encounter those variations if you're talking to a shooter from a different part of the USA or from another country.

rim, rebated-rim, belt as in belted magnum

Takes a while to pick up on all the parts, don't think I've seen a single diagram that shows all the parts to a cartridge case.

How about all the parts to a bullet - and their amazing abbreviations?

I remember years ago wondering what the heck "LSWCHP" meant...

Ogive, Secant, Tangent, boattail, rebated boattail, meplat, heel, hollow point, open point, ballistic tip, soft point, spitzer, semi-spitzer, flat nose, flat-nose round point, huh?), partition, gilding metal, solid, open base, etc... :)

CCI has an online glossary of firearm terms.

It is very comprehensive: http://www.cci-ammunition.com/default.asp?menu=1&s1=6&s2=17

FMJ, Ball, Wadcutter, Semi-wadcutter, Armor Piercing, Tracer, Slug, Buck, Double-Ought...as we move into different areas of shooting we get different nomenclature too.

Parts of a rimless bottlenecked rifle cartridge starting at the bottom if the case were standing on a table.

Case: Base- Extractor groove- Head- Body- Shoulder- Neck- Mouth-
a crimp may or may not be applied at the case mouth
Bullet: Base- Bearing surface or body- Ogive- Tip or Meplat
